Health Notes » A Gift for Caregivers
by pearlgirl
The holiday season may be more stressful and less joyful for many family caregivers. Because caregivers are often overwhelmed with the responsibilities of caring for a chronically ill loved one, the holiday season may seem like one more difficult hurdle to overcome. Following are some suggestions that may help make the holidays more enjoyable for the caregiver as well as for the care receiver. Be clear about your limits Let family members know that your caregiving duties keep you very busy and that you have limited energy for holiday gatherings and need to set limits on your involvement. Open and honest communication about the realities of the caregiving situation you face offers others the opportunity to respond with assistance. Accept that holiday traditions may change Caregivers often have to adapt their traditional role or experience of the holidays. Choose which events to host or attend based on which would be the simplest, least exhausting and most enjoyable for the

Tabla Mediterranean Bistro
by stockboy
It was dark and kind of dreary outside, but at Tabla , a Mediterranean restaurant in the Kerns neighborhood, the warmth and comfort of the place, with its lively Tuesday night crowd and attentive staff, transported us to an epicurean experience we delighted in. Mike Garofola, the general manager and sommelier, greeted and seated us at a comfortable table with a great view of the bustling kitchen. Chef Synaca Stevens, twirling and spinning with her movements was as graceful and efficient as an accomplished dancer that was only to be surpassed by the originality of her food creations. The menu—actually two—was presented. The first was a prix fixe menu—three courses for $24.00 with a Moroccan flair [changes monthly] but with several of their customer's favorites added for ‘comfort'. The second menu was their Tuesday wine flight—this week specializing in dishes prepared with and around brussel sprouts! Yes, I said brussel spro

Bamboo Sushi — Deliciously Sustainable
by shooter
A couple weeks ago, I was invited to attend a pre-opening media dinner for Bamboo Sushi. Formerly Masu East, Bamboo Sushi is the first restaurant in the U.S. serving certified sustainable sushi. What that means is that, when possible, the fish served is caught from certified wild fisheries, and the fish can be traced back to its origin. This promotes sustainable fishing practices and provides the consumer with the ability to choose fish that is sustainably caught. The restaurant has a relaxed, understated atmosphere that is comfortable and pleasing. I particularly like how the bar divides the dining area into two smaller areas with the sushi bar is off to one side. While it may seem odd not to have the sushi bar front and center, the layout works.
Most importantly, the food is delicious. We were served a set menu of sushi, sashimi, a

What it means to live in a "green" home
by TeachStreet
The Moon brothers, Garrett and Dustin, of Southeast Portland have decided to go green. It turns out that the new home they're building is already exceeding the standards for " green design " set by the Cascadia Region Green Building Council ("CRGBC"). The council was set up to establish and monitor green building standards on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest. To date, no new development has achieved all the rigorous standards set by the CRGBC in one design. The Moon's believe they are a shoe in to being the first to build a fully green home .
