Love in the City » Is Your 'Partner Picker' Broken?

by Love in the City
leaving (Written from one of my fave coffeeshops !) The end of summer is inching closer, fall is just around the corner, and the holidays will soon be upon us. Did you have a summer of love? If yes, keep up the good work. If not, help is on the way! We're starting our dating series, so stay tuned the next couple of weeks, because we're going to create a plan and a system—who wants to spend the holidays alone? Besides, the weather will change soon and nothing beats a warm snuggle, right? Your homework... Take some time and jot down some notes on what has worked, or not worked for you, in past relationships. Look for common themes, patterns and attractions to those intimate partners. Then, take some time and think about the roadblocks standing between you and a successful relationship. Be a voyeur in your own life: think about your story as if it were someone else's. I recommend writing your dating history and then setting it aside. Next, think about the strongest

Is There Love in the City?

by Love in the City
2214255725_3e601e6728 "There is love in the city," I thought. While sitting in one my coffee shops in Portland, I watch young families with their children—healthy, hip, and organic, such as it is in our green progressive city. Couples sit together, some working on their laptops with feet and legs touching, while others are talking with hands entwined. Yes, there is love in the city. As I go through my day as a matchmaker, I see singles everywhere: on their computers, reading books, or staring out a window—lost in a daydream of days past or pondering possible future happiness that has seemingly alluded them. Love is in the city for them too.... it's just finding it. We all need to start with that initial date, the first step to love or disaster. Ok, I know, I know, you have to actually get the date in order to better your chance of love, but let's be done with the disasters already. Where do you find a date? Can a woman approach a guy? How many singles events have

Indoor Active Play - When?

by nancy
Believe it or not, it's already time to book Indoor Active Play slots at Pearl Court Activity Cente r. When the cold, rainy weather starts we'll be so glad to come indoors and run and play.   We're anticipating we'll start in October and go through March. But Pearl Court Activity Center is already starting to get booked up, so we need to reserve our space soon. For late afternoon play, Monday is the only time available so we've booked it for 3:20 - 5:20. The schedule is a lot more flexible in the morning and early afternoon so we're surveying you to get your feedback. This survey has two questions. Ready, set, go! Click Here to take survey

Big Strides at Legacy

by pearlgirl
walking-0608-050 by Minot Cleveland, MD  Hippocrates said, "Walking is man's best friend." If the ancient Greek physician were alive today, I'm sure he would amend his aphorism to include women. Not to mention, older adults, slender and overweight people and those with or without medical problems. Our modern medical science confirms what the ancient Greeks proclaimed: regular physical activity is essential for a healthy body, mind and spirit. Walking is medicine that works! It's easy, fun, and one of the best ways to reap the enormous benefits of regular physical activity. Walking can reduce risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis and heart disease. Heart disease and stroke are the #1 and #3 killers of American men and women. Getting active even helps many quit smoking. Walking can also help your mind and spirit. It reduces stress, increases a sense of well-being, has a positive impact on depression and anxiety, heightens creativity an

NW Neighbors Sweat Out Pool Closure

by nancy
Many thanks Tanya for pointing out this article in the Portland Tribune . We've been wondering why the pool is closed, what with swimming lesson season going strong. Here's the article: Some Northwest Portland residents are steamed that the only public swimming pool in their part of town has been closed for seven months — included during the recent heat waves, when temperatures topped 90 degrees. The pool in the basement of the MLC School is owned by Portland Public Schools and operated by Portland Parks & Recreation. It has been shut since late last year because of leaks and that will cost an estimated half-million dollars to repair, including upgrading the pool’s plumbing and drainage systems. “This is not a priority for us at this time,” said school district spokesman Matt Shelby. “Our priority classroom instruction.” The parks bureau has no plans to immediately repair the pool, either. But neighborhood resident Katherine Dunn

Kidical Mass - Second Ride

by nancy
Kidical Mass July Last night was the second Kidical Mass ride in Portland. Decorated bikes, a primer on rules of the road, and lots of kids excited to ride safely in the street. KPTV was there, and here's a link to a video and article on their website. This was my son's first time riding his own bike on the road while I biked next to him. I couldn't have asked for a safer way for him to get some time on the road. The ride leaders are excellent, the group stays together, and all the parents and kids are watching out for each other. This is a fabulous way to role model good riding skills, and have kids and adults learning together. Kidical Mass is now a regular event, taking place on the third Friday of every month. Hope to see you on August 15th. If you'd like to get updates from the ride organizer, Angela, you can email her at angela@bta4bikes.org and ask to be added to her distribution list.

Clever Cycles? 10 more days...

by nancy
bike nancy jake fish cropped Clever Cycles is going on vacation from July 28th through August 11th. A well deserved break, I might add. So that leaves you just 10 days (they're open until 6 today) to cruise on over there or wait until mid August. Why? To try out their cool bikes, get expert advice on family commuting, and a shot in the arm of confidence that many parents need before they take their child out on the back of a bike. Living downtown made walking so easy that I forgot about my bike. Everything was available on foot, bus, max or streetcar. When we moved from one building to another we accidentally left our bikes in the storage room, forgotten. Whoops. Then parenting came around, and I have to admit just thinking about riding a bike with a child on the back made me nervous. It took my son getting his own bike to help me remember how ridiculously fun it is to cruise around on two wheels. While we were shopping for kids bikes, I tried out a few myself. While the staff were helpful, they admitte

HeartBreak—Great Pups for Adoption

by pdxdog
JohnJohnAmericanEskimo We are so lucky to be in such a wonderful dog loving community. pdxdog.com is only one site where you can find some of the hundreds of dogs up for adoption—placed on our site by the many rescue and adoption groups in our area. Too many of the stories will break your heart and the dogs are so sweet. They just want a good home and love, just like all of us. We know that there are a lot of animals that need good homes, maybe yours is one of them. Everytime I read one of these "bad" care stories, I get so angry and disgusted at these very thoughtless and stupid people. It's simple, just don't have a dog, if you don't want to take care of one! If you are looking for a pup, check pdxdog.com and the many selfless and fantastic groups that help them out. In the future, we will list some of them for you to check out. Maybe you can comment by listing someone you know that rescues and adopts dogs... We can be the best adoption and rescue city!!! Thanks Portland!
