Presentation Leads Water Blogmistress to Strong Realization
by jenniferd
I had a really neat experience yesterday. I was invited to the adidas campus, located in North Portland, to talk about the excellent quality of Portland's tap water . The folks over at adidas have organized a group of "sustainability ambassadors," who are working to improve "green" practices at their company, from head to toe. The idea is that the ambassadors meet periodically and not only decide on changes they would like to implement company-wide, but also to learn information to transmit to co-workers. I spent about 1/2 hour talking to this group of people about Portland's great tap water and worked on dispelling many of the myths and fears that people have about drinking from the tap . I was delighted that they not only listened incredibly intently to my presentation, but they also asked some great follow-up questions. I could tell that this group was really thinking about what I had told them. They even invited me back for their health fair in October. T

Grant from Kaiser Permanente Community Fund Puts Local Food on the Menu in Portland Public School and Gervais School Districts
by pearlgirl
The first school assembly of the new academic year will take place today at 10 a.m., at Atkinson Elementary in South East Portland, where school food and education leaders will gather alongside farmers, food producers, grocery retailers and government officials to cheer a grant from the Kaiser Permanente Community Fund at the Northwest Health Foundation that will subsidize approximately 2,640,000 meals with the funds needed to serve more Oregon grown and processed foods in Portland Public Schools and Gervais School Districts. The grant, secured by Ecotrust’s Food and Farms program , will bolster existing efforts to bring more regionally produced food into two distinct school districts in the immediate school year, and kick-off a six-month study to measure the impact of nourishing the minds and bodies of young school children with fresh seasonal produce and locally processed foods, while directing dollars spent to feed Oregon students back into the local economy. Party Games
by Josie
I like to entertain. The end of a long week is reason to invite some friends over for a relaxing evening. It doesn't require much- you can always get away with a simple meal for an after-work party (at least in my world). Whip up a quick pasta dish with whatever you have on hand; add a few great cheeses, some bread and a salad and you're set. Have someone else bring dessert. And, make sure you have a nice wine to go with (and by nice, I mean whatever you like that fits your budget). But, if you've done that a hundred times, and you're looking for something different to start of the weekend right, host a Friday night wine party. Call five friends who like wine. Ask each one to bring their favorite red wine (or white wine, whichever you prefer) and their favorite cheese. Instruct them to wrap the wine in a paper bag, with no label visible. Set out plates and glasses, along with a couple baguettes and some olives. When everyone arrives, you pour the masked wines, in random order. Try to

Eateries Open Throughout the City
by shooter
The Tribune has a nice list of new eateries that have opened over the last few months. Included on the list are a couple of our recent favorites, 50 Plates , which we've talked about, and D.O.C , which we'll dish about very soon. The restaurant that caught my eye, and that the Mercury talked about in great detail, is Tastebud . Chef-owner Mark Doxter has sold his rustic baked goods at famers markets around Portland for several years. After many customer requests, he opened a dining room at 3220 SE Milwaukie.
I like his story because he's someone who didn't gain a name by working in great restaurants or with "star" chefs—he gained a reputation by selling high-quality products at the local farmers markets.
Tastebud (Brooklyn) is high on my list of new restaurants to try.
Here are the other restaurants mentioned: 50 Plates (Pearl District) Belly Timber (Sunnyside) D.O.C. (Concordia) Belly (King) Lincol

Hit the Road with 50 Plates
by pearlgirl
The great American road trip is really a culinary adventure—on wheels. Every region has its own distinct taste and food culture. Fried green tomatoes. Shrimp po boys. Chowder. Pulled pork. Now that's Americana! No matter where you hail from, or which roads you've traveled, you'll enjoy a trip down sensory lane at 50 Plates . "50 Plates is a restaurant showcasing the cuisine of the American tradition. Of memories—real or imagined—of grandmother's pies, state fair fries, of date shakes and cheese steaks; a Kentucky bourbon fueled culinary road-trip beyond Route 66, from Smithfield Hams to Ipswich Clams. 50 Plates is the best of red states, blue plates, and everything in between." Housed in the understated, yet elegant, Block 90 Building on historic 13th Avenue—50 Plates is the epitome of cool. The space is lovely, but approachable. The low ceiling and L-shaped floorplan create a sense of intimacy. The chocolate and blue "cabana-s

Blue Hour targeted by the foie gras police
by shooter
The foie gras police are going after Blue Hour this Saturday, 7PM. If you have dinner reservations expect some noise and disturbance. A pre-demonstration meeting will be held at NW 10th and NW Davis at 6:30PM. As part of the protest organizers are asking people to call Blue Hour to request that foie gras be removed from the menu. If you're trying to make reservations you can probably expect it to be difficult to get through. Avoid the hassle but making reservations through OpenTable.com .As previously noted here , this same group targeted Ten 01 and received a commitment from the owner to remove foie gras from the menu. Ten 01 later put foie gras back on the menu due to customer demand. It seems lots of people like foie gras and not everyone in Portland wants it gone.
Alberta Street Oyster Bar & Grill was recently targeted and foie gras was removed from the menu, but for reasons other than political pressure. Fenouil has also been ta

Safeway: A Whole New Reason to Love Fall
by pearlgirl
Some people get excited by fall fashion, but I'm totally psyched to have Safeway open in the North Pearl—and I know that I'm not alone! We've watched construction of the Lovejoy inch along in what seems like FOREVER, but the Daily Journal of Commerce reports that it is inching toward the finish line and will open in fall . Thank gawd. Bring on the non-organic peanut butter!!! (That's right, *gasp* we eat SKIPPY in this house!)

You Go, Grill!!!
by pearlgirl
by Timothy Nishimoto sommelier at Vino Paradiso Condo life is great, isn't it? Gone is the back-breaking yard work and nightmares of a busted furnace or a flooded basement. The memories of horizontal living are fading, but many of us just can't shake the romantic notion of the Sunday backyard barbeque and our reign at the brick altar—otherwise known as the true man's grill . If you're like me, the brick altar and backyard are gone, but dreams of barbequed ribs and the perfect wine or ice-cold beer persevere. Armed with a few simple tips on matching grilled meat slathered in barbeque sauce to the perfect wine, you can confidently host a memorable barbeque in the Pearl. Barbeque Whites, The Epiphany It's hard to imagine drinking white wine with barbequed ribs, but at a barbeque several years ago, after all the beer was gone, the only thing left to drink with my ribs was Sokol Blosser "Evolution." That evening, I became hooked on the combination and ha
