Shop Talk – The Paper Station
by alex
I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). Bishops rediscovers its soul
by shooter
After being closed for just a little over a month, Bishops has reopened its Pearl location as a barbershop. You may recall that Bishops announced it was closing the salon by sending a mannequin head and ransom note to The Mercury . There is no better way to admit a mistake than to use it to announce a change. The shop reopened on July 1st with little fanfare but the familiar look of Bishops. Stop by and get a cut and a beer.

The Other Shoe Has Dropped
by pearlgirl
We've heard rumblings about two pending business closures, but were asked to keep it hush hush . Today, via Portland Picks , Bella Moda Designs (11th & Lovejoy) announced that it will not renew its lease. A liquidation sale is planned July 1–31. We'd like to wish Catherine the best of luck on future endeavors. Meanwhile, we're waiting for the other shoe to drop—confirmation that another shoe boutique will close its doors. Stay tuned.

Portland-based Nau apparel back in business
by shooter
This is an interesting story. Horny Toad, which has its sole store in the Pearl, bought Nau, based in NWDA, and is going to operate Nau as a separate subsidiary. Nau was highly praised for its sustainable business practices, eco-friendly fabrics, and philanthropy - 5 percent of profits went to charity. Tight financial and retail markets, and an overly ambitious growth plan killed it.
It's good to see the brand and products won't disappear, and it will have a chance to grow at a more reasonable pace.
Read the story at The Oregonian , KGW , Portland Business Journal , The Portland Mercury , and Ultra .

Cool Moon Ice Cream Adventure
by nancyCool Moon hosted an event yesterday for Central Portland Families. Thank you Eva for sharing such great information and making it fun!
First, everyone put on special hats and Eva showed us the kitchen. Then she let the kids check out the ingredients and the equipment including the mixer and the freezers. The kids watched her make mint chocolate chip ice cream. A small cheer when up when ice cream came out of the spout of the mixer.
After sampling the freshly made mint chocolate chip, the kids raced to the counter to enjoy a scoop of their choice.
If you'd like to join Central Portland Families for a Monday Afternoon Adventure, please email us at centralportlandfamilies (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll add you to our distribution list.
