Museum of Contemporary Craft Downsizes

by shooter
museum of contemporay craft DK Row at The Oregonian reports that the Museum of Contemporary Craft has announced budget and staff reductions.  Row reports that the reductions are anticipatory.  The museum sees corporate, foundation, and possibly individual grants shrinking in the near future, and wants to keep the institution sustainable as the economy continues into a recession.  More information will be forthcoming.

Plan a visit to the museum and give this great institution your support.

Dinosaur Egg Pinata Party Pictures!

by nancy
dino hit pinata Yes, we're finally getting the pictures up from the Dinosaur Egg Pinata Making Party last month. Thank you Abra for capturing the fun in these great photos. And thank you Utrecht Art for giving us a discount on paints and brushes. This event was organized and hosted by a couple of super creative moms, and they did a great job putting together the event and keeping more than a dozen kids focused and having fun. One of the moms is the leader of the Pearl Kids Marching Band, so we know that will be great fun. As I learned at the Dinosaur Egg party, making pinatas is a lot easier than you'd think. These crafty mamas blew up a bunch of balloons, shredded a bunch of newspaper and made a glue of flour, water and salt. There's some science in there, the salt helps to dry out the soggy pinata, allowing you to paint it the next day. Add healthy snacks and drinks, and a bunch of creative kids, and you're fairly well set. Oh, and it helps to protect your work surface because this is messy,

Crafty Kids in Central Portland

by nancy
fish We’re having a crafty summer. There’s really no other way to describe it. We’ve been sewing, painting, raiding the recycling bins to make marble tracks. Making strawberry tarts and home made pasta. Lots of working with our hands. Lots of messes in the house. Which prompted me to look online to see what options there were to mess up other people’s spaces. DIY Alert!  may just save our bacon by, well, alerting us to day camps, week-long camps and afternoon sessions for kids. This website bills itself as a 'one-stop calendar for craft events, craft classes, and craft groups in Portland, Oregon and surrounding areas. Just reading through the calendar will inspire you, and they also offer a weekly email. Their calendar highlights some fun kid events over the summer, including woodworking, mixed media camps, book making, youth fashion design camp, and fiber art camp. The calendar is easy to use, with clear identificat
