Forest Park Conservancy Maps Make Great Gifts

by pearlgirl
fpc If Santa had to pick the perfect gift for the die-hard Oregonian, there’s no doubt that it would be environmentally friendly, locally produced, designed to support a good cause and ruggedly adventurous.

Holiday shoppers looking for ideas that meet all of these qualifications for under $25 are in luck with the latest offering from The Forest Park Conservancy , the nonprofit organization that helps care for Portland’s Forest Park, one of the nation’s largest urban parks. To help celebrate Forest Park’s 60th anniversary this year, the Conservancy is offering a plethora of gifts including a commemorative 60 year anniversary limited edition of its ever-popular trail map set: the 60th Anniversary Hiking and Running Guide to Forest Park.

Formatted as 10 easy-to-use, water-resistant maps housed in a small, easy-to-carry lightweight package, the Forest Conservancy map sets provide the most comprehensive guide to the park’s 70 miles of trail

Holiday Tree Lighting in Jamison Square

by pearlgirl
treelighting Just in case you missed it, here are photos from the tree lighting ceremony in Jamison Square on November 29. Our thanks to PDBA Executive Director Joshua Ryan for generously sharing these photos. We're happy to post any other photos of this event, so if you've got 'em send them to photos@neighborhoodnotes.com .             5-year-old wish kid McKenna was granted a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to visit Disneyland to see the Disney princesses. She “officiated” the tree lighting.         This season, Pearl retailers are participating in the A Season of Wishes Program. Participating retailers are donating a percentage of sales for the day, week or month to support A Season of Wishes. See the list of participating retailers .           The Oregon Repertory Singer's Brillante Choir sang festive tunes and ushered in the holiday season.     &

Sunshine Division Food Drive

by nancy
IMG_0742 Families go through a rough patch for all sorts of reasons. In the current recession, with Oregon sadly  third in the nation for food insecurity , there seem to be more rough patches than usual.  A volunteer is organizing a food drive in condos and apartments throughout central Portland. She's coordinated with  Sunshine Division  to deliver (and pick up) their distinctive blue bins in condo and apartment lobbies. While it's true that there are many ways to donate during this season, there's something so easy about buying a few extra cans when grocery shopping, and tossing them in the bin in your lobby as you head upstairs. Several buildings have already joined in the drive, as has  Isobel's Clubhouse . If you'd like more information, please email us

Thank you Little Urbanites

by nancy
IMG_0017 Thank you  Little Urbanites  for donating  House Kidsonroof  to  Isobel's Clubhouse , and to our creative parent volunteer who organized a 'raise the roof' art party.  We spread the pieces out on the floor Friday afternoon, after Thanksgiving, when everyone needed a little creative unscripted art time. Kids and parents used markers, crayons, stickers and stencils to decorate the house. We listened to music, visited and caught up on holiday plans. Everyone helped to assemble the structure, and the children had a great time playing house and peek a boo. It's a magical place, a miniature clubhouse within, well, a miniature clubhouse. And as one parent said 'I believe the kids will feel great pride and a deep sense of appreciation every time they visit Isobel's and see and physically play with their work of art The  photos on our flickr page  tell the whole story.

Giving Thanks to Three Community Heroes

by pearlgirl
chap Every community has heroes. In the Pearl District, we're lucky to have three people who champion causes that impact our neighborhood.
Our three heroes typically fly low under the radar, but they touch many lives. We think it's important to honor these individuals who have given, and continue to give, so much to our neighborhood-and so do their admirers. What follows is a series of letters from local residents, students and business owners who have been positively affected by the work of Frank Etxaniz, Nancy Davis and Ed McNamara.   Frank Etxaniz is the founder of Children's Healing Art Project , a local nonprofit that engages, encourages, and heals children and families in crisis.    Frank Etxaniz is a man of great character. From the first time I met him, and have since worked with his organization, Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP), he has given everything he can to the children and families that are part of CHAP. The very mission of the organizatio

2nd Annual Family Conversations - Online Survey

by nancy
The 2nd Annual Family Conversations for families in central Portland generated an impressive array of ideas for how to help families thrive in central Portland. They were attended by parents and grandparents and neighbors, and the diversity of opinion and ideas and life experience was energizing.  Although we visited and connected and had pleasant conversations, these were working sessions. The groups:  1) identified issues and projects that we want to work on this year
2) identified volunteers willing to lead and/or work on these issues and projects The identified priorities so far are: Community Center in the River District (advocating for the creation of) Community Giving and Involvement (engaging children and families in) Intergenerational Relationships (developing and strengthening) Nature and Wilderness (improving children's access to) Park Stewardship (engaging children and families in) Pre-school / Early Childhood Education in the River District (advoc

Thank You Cupcake Jones - November

by nancy
IMG_0647 Lisa from  Cupcake Jones  gave us one more reason to be thankful this month with her arrival at  Isobel's Clubhouse  yesterday. She handed out chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, frosting to go with, and fondant cutouts of leaves and turkeys. Not just a simple turkey cut out, mind you, but lovingly constructed with eyes and a gobble in contrasting colors. Some of the children went for tall icing, some spread carefully (but not thinly) and others just nibbled on the turkeys with delight. You can see it all on our  flickr page .  While the children frosted, the adults made sure she'd be open the day after Thanksgiving (YES) and that the amazing pumpkin cupcake would still be on the menu next week (Another YES).  Thank you Lisa and Cupcake Jones for providing this fun activity for kids, and for donating time and materials. We had a great time. And for those of you who missed it, mark your calendars. Lisa has volunteered to make this a monthly event

Thank you Nuvrei + photos

by nancy
IMG_4772 Nuvrei  gave a spectacular class on marzipan molding and decorating yesterday at  Isobel's Clubhouse .  Thank you to Nuvrei owners for organizing this and donating time and materials, to  Lynnette and Ken  for making the introduction and much appreciation for Brian F., Emi, Levi and Brian R. who gave hands on instruction and coaching to the kids.  The parents had a great time as well. They enjoyed connecting with the staff, asking questions about their favorite pastries, and learning more about the  special desserts  Nuvrei has developed for Thanksgiving.  Brian R.  volunteered to take photos, and really captured the joy and focus on the kids faces. Check them out on our  flickr page .
