Holiday Big Reveal Map

by pearlgirl
bigreveal The Pearl District Business Association is celebrating the holiday season with its "Holiday Big Reveal." The launch event—the unveiling of holiday windows—was held on November 29, but the holiday window displays will be up through the month of December. Please note that retailers are offering special programs throughout the holiday season.  To show our support of local retailers—and to act constructively on the feedback we've received about the event—we've created a Google map of businesses who are participating in the Big Reveal. We hope that you will find this useful. For more information about this event, please visit the PDBA website .

Holiday Tree Lighting in Jamison Square

by pearlgirl
treelighting Just in case you missed it, here are photos from the tree lighting ceremony in Jamison Square on November 29. Our thanks to PDBA Executive Director Joshua Ryan for generously sharing these photos. We're happy to post any other photos of this event, so if you've got 'em send them to photos@neighborhoodnotes.com .             5-year-old wish kid McKenna was granted a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to visit Disneyland to see the Disney princesses. She “officiated” the tree lighting.         This season, Pearl retailers are participating in the A Season of Wishes Program. Participating retailers are donating a percentage of sales for the day, week or month to support A Season of Wishes. See the list of participating retailers .           The Oregon Repertory Singer's Brillante Choir sang festive tunes and ushered in the holiday season.     &

Gratitude Guide » Northwest Portland

by pearlgirl
made-in-oregon-sign We all know that it's better to give than to receive. But what if in the process of giving, you not only did yourself some good, but did others good as well. What if when you hit the stores this year to tackle your holiday shopping list, your purchases benefited a charitable organization or maybe even someone on the other side of the globe? Better yet, what if it benefited your neighbor? This year, in order to help you take the holiday spirit to the next level, we've decided to put together a list of gifts, all found in Portland, that give something back. Some of the gifts give back to the earth, having been made using eco-friendly practices, others give a portion of their proceeds to a good cause, others are committed to making sure artisans around the world are paid fair wages for their work and some goods are manufactured locally.   Northwest Portland Gifts That Give Back A Gift Guide With Gratitude

I've wanted to peek inside Hakoya Lofts on North Williams for a while now, and he published an article about it yesterday on Portland Architecture . It's definitely a 'note of interest' and we hope you enjoy it. photo: Brian Libby

Sunshine Division Food Drive

by nancy
IMG_0742 Families go through a rough patch for all sorts of reasons. In the current recession, with Oregon sadly  third in the nation for food insecurity , there seem to be more rough patches than usual.  A volunteer is organizing a food drive in condos and apartments throughout central Portland. She's coordinated with  Sunshine Division  to deliver (and pick up) their distinctive blue bins in condo and apartment lobbies. While it's true that there are many ways to donate during this season, there's something so easy about buying a few extra cans when grocery shopping, and tossing them in the bin in your lobby as you head upstairs. Several buildings have already joined in the drive, as has  Isobel's Clubhouse . If you'd like more information, please email us

Thank you Little Urbanites

by nancy
IMG_0017 Thank you  Little Urbanites  for donating  House Kidsonroof  to  Isobel's Clubhouse , and to our creative parent volunteer who organized a 'raise the roof' art party.  We spread the pieces out on the floor Friday afternoon, after Thanksgiving, when everyone needed a little creative unscripted art time. Kids and parents used markers, crayons, stickers and stencils to decorate the house. We listened to music, visited and caught up on holiday plans. Everyone helped to assemble the structure, and the children had a great time playing house and peek a boo. It's a magical place, a miniature clubhouse within, well, a miniature clubhouse. And as one parent said 'I believe the kids will feel great pride and a deep sense of appreciation every time they visit Isobel's and see and physically play with their work of art The  photos on our flickr page  tell the whole story.
