On-Street Bike Parking in Downtown

by shooter
katu-bike-parking You may have seen them around town already, but if not, you will.  PDOT has added four new bike "corrals" at popular destinations in downtown. The new bike corrals replace two regular parking spaces, and provide parking for 16 to 24 bikes.  The locations for the corrals were selected based on traffic and are intended to serve the high volume of bikes arriving at the locations.  The on street parking also improves the pedestrian right-of-ways at these locations.  Without the on-street parking, bicyclists would lock their bikes to any poles or news boxes available, creating clutter and reducing the space for pedestrians. The new locations include: Ace Hotel, south side of SW Stark at SW 10th Ave. Bijou Cage and Stumptown coffee, east side of SW 3rd Ave. at SW Pine St. Powell's Books, south side of NW Couch St. at NW 11th Ave. Southpark Seafood Grill & Wine Bar, west side of SW 9th Ave./SW Park at SW Salmon St. These are in addition to the

Kidical Mass Frequently Asked Questions

by nancy
kidical Lots of folks are curious about Kidical Mass . Here are  Bicycle Transportation Alliance 's answers to frequently asked questions:
Is this just like Critical Mass but with kids? Absolutely not. We are a family friendly law-abiding ride. Our purpose is to teach kids, parents and caregivers safety skills and provide a ride in which to practice them. We are creating awareness for the growing presence of kids and families on bikes and the need for all road users to respect other users of the road. We are also bringing together families who bike in an effort to provide a positive community experience that will show children how much fun riding your bike can be! Are we required to have a parade permit to ride in KM? No. We are riding as a group, following all traffic laws and are not required to have a permit since we are not purposefully stopping traffic or blocking traffic. It's true we may be slow as snails and therefore slow traffic, but bikes are allowed to ri

Yard Sign 101

by pearlgirl
yard-signs Have you ever wondered how to get one of the yard signs that asks for motor vehicles to slow down for kids, pedestrians, or bikes? After a little digging, the Stephens Street Neighborhood Watch Group was able to find the answer to this question. Thanks to Steve Huckins and the entire Stephens Street crew for sharing this information with all of us. Together, we can do more—better! Yard Sign Lender Program The City of Portland Office of Transportation has yard signs available for residents to "borrow" for as long of a period of time as they are interested. Each sign features a black steel "A" frame along with a 18"h x 24"w PVC sign. The signs, attached by independent clips, hang freely from the steel "A" frame and move in the breeze. The Office of Transportation yard signs are portable and suitable for quick and easy display by residents in their yards. Signs should be brought indoors each evening, if possible, to minimize vandal

Old Sauvie Island Bridge is Gone, a Missed Opportunity

by shooter
sauvie-island-bridge-2 I couldn't agree more with this post from Portland Spaces Burnside Blog. As noted in the post, a pedestrian bridge will be constructed at Flanders over 405, I believe in about 5 years. It will be narrower, boring, and functional.

It is supposed to be less expensive, $3.5 million is the number that comes to mind, but with the rising cost of fuel and inflation we shouldn't be surprised when the actual cost is the same or more than the $7 million the Sauvie Island Bridge was estimated to cost.

That would be ironic. It gets shot down for being too expensive, then the "cheaper" version ends up costing just as much.

I also wouldn't be surprised if bike traffic increases enough that the coming bridge needs to be wider to accommodate the traffic, which would also cause costs to increase. But we will just have to wait 5 years to see...

Portland In the National News... Again!

by stockboy
portland-topper USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .

Twilight Criterium: Thrills and a few Spills

by shooter
twilight-criterium-primary I went to my first Twilight Criterium Friday. I wasn't sure what to expect, but wanted to try photographing this kind of sports event.

It was really fun! Watching the riders race on a short track, through the streets, was exciting. As a spectator, it was great, because each lap took about a minute—I saw lots of action. It was fun to shoot for the very same reason. Shooting the race did have its challenges though. The combination of speed and twilight meant finding the right balance of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to stop the action and get a crisp image. I avoided using a flash, because I wasn't sure how much that would affect the riders. I worried about riders getting a flash in the eyes while in the apex of a turn, because of some guy (me) lying on the sidewalk trying to get that up close angle. Next time I'll use a flash part of the time, but I think I will still avoid it when I'm close to the riders. If any participants out there want to provide inp

BIKE BOX DESIGN Study In Portland Neighborhoods

by pearlgirl
bike_box The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) announced that City Council accepted an update to the "Bicycle Safety: Bike Box and Alternatives Report" that modifies implementation of the project at two locations to better evaluate the effectiveness of Portland's innovative design of the bike box - a safety treatment to reduce bicycle/motorist crashes and save lives. Consistent with Federal Highway Administration approval for experimentation, PDOT will be phasing in the green color of the bike box traffic control safety treatment at NW Broadway at Hoyt, SE Clinton at 39th Ave and SW Terwilliger Blvd at Taylors Ferry Rd in both directions. This will allow the City to collect data that helps determine the relative effectiveness of the green color as part of the overall safety treatment. After a short period of time to collect evaluation data, the green color will be added, similar to the eight locations citywide which received the treatment this past spring. While used internati

Traffic Plan for Bridge Pedal

by pearlgirl
pbp-poster The 13th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday morning, August 10, will involve nine Willamette River bridges in Portland. The event includes three different cycle routes and one for walkers. As usual, the event will require some changes in how motorists get around the city, especially when crossing the Willamette River. Several bridges - including the Burnside, Morrison, and St. Johns - will remain open to vehicular traffic in both directions, despite the presence of cyclists and walkers. Here is the traffic plan for Bridge Pedal, starting with bridges from south to north: The Sellwood Bridge will be closed westbound from 6 am to 9 am. The Ross Island Bridge will be closed westbound at 5 am and will reopen by noon. The Marquam Bridge/Interstate 5 will be closed northbound (upper deck) from 2 a.m. to noon. The Hawthorne Bridge will be closed eastbound from 6 am to 10:15 am, with TriMet bus service operating in both directions. The outside eastbound lane will be closed be
