New NW Boutique is Absolutely Unique!

by northwest nola
41KNJ2ZY89L._SL500_AA280_ Today I visited what surely must be one of Portland's most unique spaces -- a new boutique art gallery tucked quietly into Northwest Portland. The Life Jacket Design Shop & Gallery, which opened about 6 weeks ago, is home to all things original: one-of-a-kind artwork, mixed media, accessories and home decor. Owner and resident Carol Christensen, a Seattle native who recently relocated to Portland after spending 18 years in New York, is both curator and artisan of this little museum. She will proudly guide you on a tour of her small space, telling you many of the stories that accompany her creative expressions. Carol named the gallery, Life Jacket, at least partially in reference to the fact that it's her new project aimed at taking her mind off of her son going away to college. In essence, it is her "lifejacket," though she is sure to note that she is not quite that desperate! A lifejacket, she thinks, tends to wrap itself around you and keep you above the "st

Help Neighborhood Bookstores Turn the Page—Shop Locally!

by shooter
bookstore-kids We've been hearing stories for several years now about the " death " of independent bookstores, and this article from the Tribune highlights challenges for several bookstores in town. I hope the prognosticators are proven wrong.

We are fortunate to live within blocks of Powell's , which makes it easy to fulfill our literary needs or kill a rainy afternoon just perusing the stacks. Browsing through a mega-chain just isn't the same experience, because the range of books offered is much narrower and makes it less likely for a random discovery to occur. (And then there's the personalized service!!!)

Independent bookstores are showing some signs of life. As the article points out, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) has seen its membership increase by over 100 stores in each of the last 3 years. While doing a little research for this post, I came across this graph that shows job trends for independent bookstores. After declining sharpl

Artists: Are You Ready For Representation?

by art2hart
DSCN1438 When artists find out that I am a curator and a visual artist agent, they want me to represent them. An agent is the mouthpiece and marketing tool for a visual artist, who normally spends time making art, not trying to sell it. In fact, trying to sell, or market, is one of the most difficult aspects of the visual arts business. Most visual artists are shy, and just want to do their craft. Going out and finding venues and buyers is time consuming for them and takes them way, way, out of their personal comfort zone. This is where I come in. I find places for artists to show their work. I negotiate with the venue management on the conditions of the show, and make sure the artist is fairly represented. I also design postcards and send out notices of the events. Unfortunately, I can't work with all artists, because they are not ready for me. There are some key factors I look for when I choose to work with an artist. In addition to the quality of their work (a personal esthetic on my pa

New Stuff » Neighborhood Photo Galleries

by pearlgirl
kenton-pb Hi neighbors, Neighborhood Notes is pleased to announce the addition of photo galleries to our neighborhood pages—yep, all 95 of 'em! (See an example here .) This is a big project, and we need YOUR help. Please send us photos of your neighborhoods! Please include your name, website (if you're a professional photographer), and a little info about your submission. This can be as simple as the photo subject or location, or an elaboration on the who, what, when, where, and why of your photo.  As we get more photos, we'll populate flickr photo galleries for every neighborhood and link them to each neighborhood page. In the future, we'll have some fun photo contests as well. Stay tuned for more details! Now, get out there and shoot something!

"Bande a part" at Augen Gallery

by shooter
bande-sample For those of us who grew up in the 60's, started appreciating music in the 70's, and came of age in the 80's, this show will be bring back memories. Even though I grew up on the opposite coast, this music was very much a part of my life. A show like this will take me beyond the music and glimpse the lifestyles of the music "heroes" that us "wannabes" tried to emulate. I can't wait to drop by to see this show.

The Ceramics of Gertrud and Otto Natzler

by pearlgirl
2008_8_Teardrop_Natzlers August 2, 2008-January 25, 2009 Focusing on work from a local collection and several museums, this exhibition provides a sampling of ceramics by the late Gertrud and Otto Natzler. The Natzlers - who became internationally known for their distinct lava and crater glazes and elegant yet simple pots, bowls, vases and other hand-thrown vessels - produced over 25,000 works together out of their Los Angeles-based studio betwen 1935 and 1971. This exhibition celebrates the Natzlers' richly textured, colorful work and pays tribute to the lives of two important leaders in the history of modern ceramics. The exhibition also explores their influence on contemporary ceramics and includes work by Adam Silverman and Jeremy Briddell. Selected audio recordings, archival photographs and films will be available in the exhibition gallery.
