Old Sauvie Island Bridge is Gone, a Missed Opportunity

I couldn't agree more with this post from Portland Spaces Burnside Blog. As noted in the post, a pedestrian bridge will be constructed at Flanders over 405, I believe in about 5 years. It will be narrower, boring, and functional.

It is supposed to be less expensive, $3.5 million is the number that comes to mind, but with the rising cost of fuel and inflation we shouldn't be surprised when the actual cost is the same or more than the $7 million the Sauvie Island Bridge was estimated to cost.

That would be ironic. It gets shot down for being too expensive, then the "cheaper" version ends up costing just as much.

I also wouldn't be surprised if bike traffic increases enough that the coming bridge needs to be wider to accommodate the traffic, which would also cause costs to increase. But we will just have to wait 5 years to see...
