Undoing of a vision

by shooter
Yesterday's Portland Tribune had a really interesting article about the proposed Con-Way development in Northwest Portland. It raises questions about how these projects get done. Con-Way chose to go public with its concept for developing its 20 acres, and has met resistance from the Northwest neighborhood. Homer Williams claims that going public first is a mistake, that agreements need to be in place before going to the public. That strategy, however, smacks of back room deals and a lack of transparency. Peter Finley Fry complains that neighborhood associations have too much power and that "We artificially empower mediocrity". I'm not even sure what to make of that belief. It sounds like Mr. Finley believes neighborhoods should butt out of development plans.

As one who is involved in my neighborhood, I think transparency is important and think that Con-Way took the right approach. Involvement of the neighborhood is crucial for a development such as the Con-Way pr

Cool Moon Ice Cream Adventure

by nancy

Cool Moon hosted an event yesterday for Central Portland Families. Thank you Eva for sharing such great information and making it fun!

First, everyone put on special hats and Eva showed us the kitchen. Then she let the kids check out the ingredients and the equipment including the mixer and the freezers. The kids watched her make mint chocolate chip ice cream. A small cheer when up when ice cream came out of the spout of the mixer.
After sampling the freshly made mint chocolate chip, the kids raced to the counter to enjoy a scoop of their choice.
If you'd like to join Central Portland Families for a Monday Afternoon Adventure, please email us at centralportlandfamilies (at) gmail (dot) com and we'll add you to our distribution list.

Guest Scooper for Ben & Jerry's free cone day

by shooter
bj free cone 3 Guess who stopped by the downtown Ben & Jerry's to scoop a few cones.

Yes, that is Commissioner Sam Adams behind the counter!

Unfortunately Sam's schedule prevented him from making an appearance at the Pearl store.

And the weather stopped him from being a guest cabbie for PDX Pedicab, but he did have time for a few shots. Before anyone says anything, he wasn't actually riding on the sidewalk.

Ben & Jerry's is giving out free cones until 8PM tonight, be sure to stop by and get yours!

Free Cone Mayhem in the Pearl

by pearlgirl
Shooter just stopped by Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop in the Pearl and snapped a couple of quick pics. The line wraps around the building past Bishop's Salon, but it's worth it if you have the time to spare.

Lisa Watson, owner of Cupcake Jones says,"the line was long from the very start."

PDX Pedicab is out shuttling riders between the Pearl and downtown Scoop Shops. They have a special guest 'pedaler' for the next hour. Any guesses on who it is?

T:BA:08 Think beyond the stage

by shooter
From the Portland Tribune : “It’s contemporary work that is addressing its time — sometimes indirectly, sometimes directly,” says Mark Russell, the New York-based guest artistic director of the Time-Based Art Festival. “These are artists that are thinking outside of the box, usually. And people can get into that. Portland is a perfect city for that, because it’s a city that thinks outside the box.” The performances, dances, music and visual arts that make up this year’s TBA will not be presented until September. But — cue drumroll — the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art has announced the players for the sixth year of the festival. “There is all this amazing work going on around the world, and I try to get the cream of the crop to come to Portland,” Russell says. “And sometimes the themes come out as we’re working on it. Like I didn’t expect to book a French series, but it’s come about that way because some of the most interesting work in choreography and performance art i
