Vintage Portland auto shop named to historic register

by shooter
A former automotive repair shop in downtown Portland and two historic architecture examples in Portland and Gresham will be listed in the National Register of Historic Places this month.

Oregon Historical Society officials named the G.G. Gerber Building at 210 NW 11th Ave. in the Pearl district a shining example of an early auto repair shop.

The open-floor building was built in 1919 as a part of the city's downtown "auto row."

George Gordon Gerber opened the shop to provide auto sheet metal enameling services on the West Coast.

I believe that this is the same building that Deschutes Brewery is converting to a brew pub. If so, its nice to see that another old building in the Pearl will be preserved. I believe that a listing on the Registry of Historic Places puts restrictions on the building. If anyone knows for sure please comment.

Dig This!

by pearlgirl
We missed a really great article a couple of weeks ago. Portland Tribune's home section had a really nice write up on Dig Garden Shop and owner Thomas Adkisson.

If you haven't been into Dig, you're in for a real treat. You'll discover how to honor nature in an urban setting.

AIA is looking good...

by pearlgirl
We were walking down 11th Avenue on Friday when I was stopped in my tracks. I just caught sight of the AIA building (at Flanders) which is undergoing a dramatic transformation. The familiar red brick was gone--freshly painted in rich walnut brown. The building looks so different, but wow does it look good!

March & Rally in North Park Blocks

by pearlgirl
Just in case you are wondering what is going on in the north park blocks this morning, it's a peace march and rally to voice opposition to the war/occupation in Iraq, the potential war on Iran, and the war on the working people of America.

Thanks to Lisa at cupcake jones for the tip!

Physical Element gives good window...

by pearlgirl
I love a great window display. It's a detail, but it speaks volumes to me about the shop in question, creativity of the owner and their desire to communicate with their customers (and potential customers). The Pearl has some really great window displays and we want to give everyone a peek. We'll bring you an engaging window display at least once per month. We call it "giving good window".

This is the window at Physical Element . What's great about it is the story behind it. This is Jo's blog entry about the window:

Physical Element is proud to feature work by fashion designer Jennifer Baggett in our windows this week. Many of you may know Jennifer from Bella Moda Designs and Physical Element over the past two years. Jennifer has just graduated from the apparel design program at the Art Institute. For one week, we are featuring two designs from Jennifer's Senior Collection. Congratulations Jennifer!

Not only is Jo's window visually appealing,

Olea Restaurant Scores Aaron Barnett as New Executive Chef

by shooter
Olea , the restaurant Food & Wine called one of the “hottest new restaurants in the world” in 2005 now lays claim to having one of the hottest chefs to grace the Portland area: Executive Chef Aaron Barnett.

The Cordon Bleu-accredited Barnett arrived in Portland with a resume that includes working at Canada’s lauded Lumiere Restaurant and a stint as an assistant on Chef Rob Feenie’s Food Network Canada show, “New Classics with Rob Feenie.”

Barnett also studied under esteemed Chef Gary Danko before working as a sous chef at San Francisco’s Myth Restaurant. He then moved on to an executive chef position at Desert Sage Restaurant in La Quinta, Calif., where he cemented his stellar reputation when the restaurant earned the best new restaurant award from Palm Springs Life magazine.

Public Market sets sights on new home

by shooter
The suggested locations for the Portland Public Market keep getting closer to the Pearl. This latest idea is the building across Glisan from the Post Office. This is the same building where the back parking lot is going to be converted to a park, to extend the north park blocks.

From the Portland Tribune...

The proposal to house a year-round public market at the historic Union Station building appears to be dead in the water, since the Portland Public Market Foundation now has set its sights on a new location.

The new plan is for the much-talked-about market to occupy the ground floor of the federal homeland security office at 511 N.W. Broadway, when that operation relocates.

Portland’s Melvin Mark Development Company plans to acquire the building from its current owner, the U.S. General Services Administration, within two years, Paul said.

Melvin Mark would then lease the ground floor of the building – 37,000-square feet, or

Pearl’s Wyatt bails out of condo tower market

by shooter
When developer Bob Ball decided to downgrade the condominiums in his high-profile, 15-story tower, The Wyatt, to apartments, he believed the market was trying to tell him something simple: There are too many condo units in the Pearl District. The market is too slow.

“It’s always prudent to respond to the market accordingly,” Ball said. “And our goals are to make the place livable and improve the neighborhood.”

Located at 1001 N.W. 14th Ave., the property is rising amid a flush of Pearl District condominiums. Portland developers are pushing urban living as an alternative to the suburbs in the hopes of drawing more dwellers to the urban core.

Current listings for the Pearl District show 173 condo units on the market, with an average listing price of $665,000. The market spectrum is wide, however: The highest listing price is $3.2 million and the lowest is $142,000, according to the Regional Multiple Listing Service.
