Platform 3...
by pearlgirl
More input about the Platform International Animation Festival:
What happens when you put 100 animators in a room, ply them with liquor, and ask them to make a cartoon?
"It's about what I expected," said Dan Meth, the organizer of last night's Frederator Drinking and Drawing event at Someday Lounge. "It's like a hundred people having sex with markers. It's like an orgy of cartoons."
The Frederator event was part of the Platform International Animation Festival , and it less resembled an orgy than an assembly line where the workers defeat their alienation with beer and whiskey. (And something called the Hanna Barboozer, a special offering from Someday that included muddled lime and Champagne.) Each inker— participants included big names like Bill Plympton and Jerry Beck—was given 12 minutes to draw eight frames of a cartoon, with only the last frame of the previous animator for inspiration and continuity. After three hours of teams working in shifts, pe

Oba gets some love from the blogosphere...
by pearlgirl
Mom and Dad gave us a gift card to Oba , a restaurant in the Pearl district of Portland, for Christmas. Ricky and I hadn't used it yet, so after we finished bark dusting yesterday we decided to shower and take ourselves out for a treat.
Boy, was it ever a treat! They recommend reservations, but since we went on a whim we didn't have any. We could have waited 20-30 minute for a table in the dining room, but instead we opted for immediate seating in the lounge. There wasn't quite as much atmosphere, and it was louder, but it also meant we got to eat right away, and we were both very hungry.

Platform 2...

More musings on the Platform International Animation Festival:
... A little bit later, my dear friend Nancy Breaux and I went down to see a free event that's part of the Platform International Animation Festival. The promise was to have a bunch of animations projected onto buildings all around the Pearl District, so you could walk around and see them. Unfortunately it had been pouring rain on and off all day. So Nancy and I changed our plans to simply have dinner, but when the weather seemed to clear a little at 9, we headed down. Good thing - it was fantastic. We saw an incredible installation by our hometown animator heroine Rose Bond, who found a corner building with about six windows on each side where she projected animated scenes as if they were taking place in the building. It was accompanied by a fine soundtrack as well...

More Platform Festival goodness

A local blogger posts about his experience at last night's event in the Pearl. Check out the video too!

A New York alternative weekly has more good things to say about the festival and Portland:
Considering it's the first International animation festival on U.S. soil (the others are in Ottawa, Annecy and Croatia), I initially wondered why an event like the Platform International Animation Festival wasn't being held in a bigger American city, but now I realize that something like this would be buried in a place like New York. Like myself, a lot of festival attendees are first timers to Portland, Oregon, who thought that Platform would be a good opportunity to see the northwestern city for ourselves. And I must say that's it's well-behaved drivers and trusting "little-city-that-could" demeanor is a perfect fit—I mean, I've been here for four days and the city's alphabetical streets and crunchy, slapdash fashion misfires ha

Museum of Contemporary Craft Block Party!
by shooter
The Museum of Contemporary Craft will hold a party for its grand reopening July 22nd. Craft PDX Block Party will take place from noon until 7:30PM. The streets of Northwest 8th & Davis, surrounding the Museum's new location on the North Park Blocks, will be closed for this family-friendly event that welcomes the public.
Why is this important? It is a wonderful addition to our rich art culture here in the Pearl. But most importantly, craft is an art form that touches us all. Craft is usable wearable art, something we can hold, feel, and use. It has a connection to culture in a way that no other art from does. For example, basket weaving was created for utilitarian purposes. But over time people felt a desire to express themselves in their basket weaving, with each culture bringing its unique vision and experience to this art form. Jewelry making is universal in that people have sought to decorate themselves almost as long as we have existed. But the style of je

Relish July news
by pearlgirl
Dear Relish friends and family,
Wow - it has been both a long and exciting few months! As many of you know, I have been attending a Parsons Interior Design course in New York, attended ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair), Sofa NY Craft and now (finally) having a little vacation. I have seen so many products and new introductions, crafted ideas for our next space and more than anything got a chance to see, feel, touch and observe many wonderful textiles, plastics, resins, woods and materials (mostly recycled of course!) and the wonderful people that are creating and developing them into sustainable furnishings, jewelry and art.
I look forward to sharing more interior design knowledge and related furnishings with many of you -- both instore and online in the coming months.
In the meantime, we are running our summer promotion below.
all the best, trisha

Sip the Summer Away with Ten 01's New Wine Dining Series
by pearlgirl
This July, Ten-01 will introduce a "Summer Wine Dinner Series" featuring two of the Willamette Valley's premier wineries. Sommeliers Erica Landon and Savanna Ray along with Executive Chef Jack Yoss will create a five-course menu for each dinner to compliment each presented wine. This series will provide guests with a unique opportunity to speak with local winemakers about their craft and to taste a selection of rare wines.
The series will feature the following wineries:
Saturday, July 7, 6:30 p.m. – Cristom Winery
Winemaker Steve Dorner's philosophy on winemaking is one of a hands-off approach: he doesn't call himself a winemaker, rather he tries to let the grapes express themselves. Utilizing Old World winemaking techniques - whole clusters, native yeast fermentation, and gentle and minimal handling - Cristom handcrafts wines that are smooth, elegant and subtle. These characteristics have earned Cristom distinction among wine enthusiasts and indust
