SPA MANAGER
Kanani Pearl Spa needs a qualified spa manager for 30-35 hours per week (may include Saturdays)
Only professionals from the spa, salon, hotel, or restaurant industries with proven history of employment should apply.
Our manager is responsible for the professional management of the flow in and out of the spa, handling clients with impeccable grace, and overseeing the needs of the spa, including bookings and handling inquiries from the phone or web.
Multi-tasking, computer skills, and a strong work ethic is a must.
We feel we have an amazing team of incredible people who form the nucleus of our successful spa environment, so you must be a team person.
Compensation is from $12 per hour with paid vacation benefits.

The Pearl District Business Association Walking Map
The oldest of the three maps, the PDBA Walking Map is sponsored by the membership of the local business association . There are over 220 entries in the map directory, encompassing a wide cross section of local retail, restaurants and services.
This map offers a very nice book-style directory accompanied by a neighborhood map. It's compact and contains a lot of useful information.
Unscene Urban Navigator

New chef at Vino Paradiso

Ian Duncan -- former Sous Chef at Lovely Hula Hands and Line Chef at ClarkLewis -- has been named the new chef at Vino Paradiso . Not only does the wine bar have a new chef, they have a new menu .
On June 3rd at 6 p.m., Vino Paradiso will host a winemakers dinner with Viento Winery . Enjoy a 4 course, 5 wine dinner with winemaker Rich Cushman. $65 per person. Reservations required.

"{Winemaker Rich] Cushman makes mostly wines from Eastern Washington fruit. His syrahs are superb, and he's one of the few making good domestic sangiovese. And perhaps the most consistently great viognier I've ever had is from Viento."

The Design District

This past week, the Oregonian ran a brief blurb about Landfair Furniture moving to the Pearl District . In the piece, they describe the North Pearl as the "Design District".
"This section of the Pearl is becoming known as the Design District, with Globe Lighting, Bedford Brown, Kravet and other related businesses within a few blocks of one another"
While I understand the need to market the North Pearl, I think it's a mistake to label that small section as the one that specializes in design when we have a huge home furnishings group peppered throughout the neighborhood. It's like saying that the area around the armory is "the gallery district" because of a few galleries in close proximity to each other.
The building that Landfair resides in is called Pearl District Design Center and I'm guessing that's the source of the label. When you consider the 60 or so home furnishings retailers in the Pearl, you've got to realize that the neighborhood itse

John at Furnish/inside is still playing the victim...

Shame on you John! You still claim that the employee embezzlement caused your problems. The real problem is you rip people off, as indicated in your settlement with the Department of Justice !
John made this claim in an article that appeared yesterday in the Oregonian. He claims once again that he was the victim and that others cause all his problems. Boo hoo John, everyone should pity you, NOT! What you do is bring in cheap, ugly furniture from other stores, put ridiculous markups on it and then sell it at a "discount" with the sole purpose of ripping people off. Prior to that you would take people's deposits never intending to order the product and putting their money in your pocket. I know this first hand John. You are not a victim; you are an unscrupulous shop owner who steals from people and cries pity me when someone steals from you.

Portland, Ore. — Like a glacial breeze off Oregon's Mount Hood, Portland blows away the cobwebs of same-old travel.
Instead of dutifully slogging through museums, how about pulling up a chair at a sidewalk cafe, sipping chai or a microbrew and asking your server where he'd go? Or renting a bike and seeing how many neighborhoods you could breeze through before happy hour? And you have to love a city that embraces not one, but two, happy hours — from about 5 to 7 each evening and then a second-wind version from about 10 p.m. to midnight.
And why not? It's one of the key questions of the Portland mind-set, along with its twin, "What if?" Some Portlanders chant the city mantra "Think Different," while others echo "Keep Portland Weird." Weirdness is so institutionalized that the Visitors Association hands out "Keep Portland Weird" bumper stickers.

PNCA receives $15M gift...

Hallie E. Ford, a 102-year-old philanthropist, is giving the Pacific Northwest College of Art $15 million, the largest single donation to an Oregon cultural group.
The gift signals an important turnaround at the once-struggling art school and marks its growing role as a hub for the city's creative economy.
The college will use most of the money to create an ambitious program that will bring world-class artists, performers and designers to live and teach in Portland. Under the program, the college's 3,000 full-time and continuing education art students will be able to study painting, design, computer graphics and the like, with the artists.
