Transformation adds charm to Portland's Pearl District

Upon finding your way into Portland's Pearl District, pause for a moment, close your eyes and let your imagination run free.
You can almost hear the sounds of another era. The clink of steel pails at the Holly Dairy. The chugging of a heavily laden train pulling away from the loading docks on 13th Avenue. The bustle in a warehouse in which the inventory is detailed in block letters on the brick facade: "sinks, dishwashers, mixers, choppers, waffle irons, toasters, slicers."
Today, art galleries occupy the warehouses, bistro tables and planter boxes are arranged on the loading docks, a brewpub is housed in the dairy, and the train and its tracks are long gone.
The Pearl, on the northern edge of downtown Portland, is a textbook success story of how an industrial core can be transformed into a fashionable neighborhood of boutiques, galleries, cafes, parks and stylish loft dwelli

Dear Members and Friends of the Garden,

It is time that we announce dues for 2007. For those who would like to be considered full-fledged members, the dues are $50 per year (low income members, $25).

Many of you were part of the committee that laid the foundation for what the garden has become. Your inspiration and planning has produced a vibrant and dynamic space.

For those of you who find yourself inactive, please consider joining this year or at least giving a donation to the River District Community Garden. We are a small, but enthusiastic group and we appreciate what you can donate.

If you would like to become a Friend of the Garden, we will accept any amount you are willing to send.

Growing Pearl Gains National Attention

by pearlgirl

Growing Pearl gains national attention
Some locally based retailers are wondering if there's room left
Portland Business Journal - April 27, 2007
by Wendy Culverwell

Elizabeth Prusiewicz has stood watch over her corner of the Pearl District for four years.

Her tiny shop, Knit Knot Studio , occupies 450 well-organized square feet in a first-floor corner of the Chown Pella Building, at Northwest Glisan Street and 13th Avenue.

Prusiewicz and her husband, a teacher, moved to the Pearl District five years ago. Knit Knot opened about a year later, almost by accident. The space was available and Prusiewicz was tired of her former profession, hair dressing. So she turned her lifelong passion for knitting into a business and hung her shingle.

But her story might not be possible today. Retail space in the Pearl District is in short supply and small independent shopkeepers such as Prusiewicz worry their days are numbered.

Security alert

by pearlgirl

On Saturday evening, one of the Pearl buildings had a security intrusion. A team comprised of a man and woman (both professionally dressed) accessed a secure front entry (details not being released) and inspected the mail and lobby area. Then they descended into the garage, opened the garage doors from the inside and proceeded to drive their car -- the license plates covered by sweatshirts -- into the garage where they stayed for roughly ten minutes. Although nothing has been reported stolen YET, the building may be a target for a larger criminal endeavor.

This pair obviously knows how to compromise security features in a condominium building. Please alert your security committees, property management companies and board members so they can be aware of this issue.

More than two weeks ago, another Pearl building was accessed by a stolen access card key. The intruders also checked out the mail area, descended to the garage and stole a navigati

TBA is on its way..

by pearlgirl
The lineup for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s fifth annual Time-Based Art Festival has been announced, and no mainstream name dominates. If there is a headliner, said TBA’s artistic director, Mark Russell, it’s the Donna Uchizono Company.

Instead of one big show, Russell promises little surprises running through the festival, which runs Sept. 6 to Sept. 16.

In the case of the New York-based Uchizono Company, those include performance by “a rather famous Russian dancer,” also known as Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Moule' (hooray)

by pearlgirl
Pearl Insider poops on the new women's store called Moule' at 1225 NW Everett:

First we got an email: "Do you know what kind of store is going in across Everett from the W+K building? It's the one with a giant photo of a woman in the window..."

Then a note from a PDBA insider: "They have ultra-chic designers- Betsey Johnson, J.Brand and Chip & Pepper Jeans, etc. Also bags, shoes and luggage by Philippe Starck. And . . . gasp! . . . dresses and tops by Catherine Malandrino!"

And then we opened the latest Portland Tribune, and whaddayaknow, they're all over it too. The buzz has begun... our newest stylish neighbor, Moulé, is open for business.

Everyone must get bent...O

by shooter

It's now open and the entire Pearl must get bent...O. All right, the Bob Dylan reference was a stretch, but the food at get bento is worth a visit. The menu is simple, the place is simple, but it’s just plain good. They have 4 items on their menu - vegi, tempeh, chicken, and beef. On Fridays they'll have fish. And it’s all served over rice (brown or white). And the price isn't too bad either. Don't expect a lot when you got here, just expect some good eats. And the ingredients are local, organic, and free range. What more could you want but green bento.

Location: 505 NW 14th Ave (corner of Glisan and 14th).
Hours: mon – sat 11a-9p
Tel: 503-264-2368

Shooter says check it out.

Furnish/Inside - Sample This!

by shooter

Different day, SOS.

Now it’s a "Floor Sample" sale. The "Last Days" signs are gone, only the name has changed. So I guess its safe to assume that the "Last Days" was referring to the name and not the store or the scumbag practice of the perpetual "sale". At least the “For Sale” sign is still out, that leaves some hope that this "business" will be gone soon.

Come on John, cut the BS, shut the store down and crawl back to Phoenix. We are tired of having bad furniture in a tacky store, perpetually “on sale” at highly inflated prices. The people who live here figured out long ago what you’re up to, and your business practices give us a bad reputation with the rest of the city.

Stick a fork in it, its done.
