Going SoLo

by pearlgirl

I've watched the build out of SoLo Bar for many months now. The subtle, yet eye-catching curved metal awning that covers the descent into the space below Office Max (in Lovejoy Square, on Lovejoy between 13th and 14th) beckoned me to "Look inside" long before there was anything to see. A few weeks ago, I noticed that the boards nailed over the entry were removed and a wooden door stood in its place. Talk about having an Alice in Wonderland moment!

I received an invitation to SoLo Bar's opening (a week ago) and I have to say that what is behind the door is equally fantastic. As you descend below street level, you enter a jewel-box sized space (1400 ft) that is outfitted to accomodate crowds comfortably. Leather banquettes line the wood-paneled walls on one side of the room, while a generously sized bar area comprises the other side. Whether you come to mix and mingle or chat with a group of friends, thi

Another La Vanguardia Review

by shooter
I recently went to La Vanguardia for lunch. After reading numerous reviews, most of them bad, I just had to see for myself. The interior is sparse and loud but that doesn't bother me. I like concrete floors and noisier spaces. Service was decent, but given the lack of patrons, it seemed a bit slow. My friends and I started by trying the Mega Borracho salsa while deciding what to eat. While the salsa was good (not great) 5 bucks for a small serving and bowl of tortilla chips seemed really steep. It’s when we ordered more that my friends figured out you get charged $5 for each serving. Extra salsa and chips can get spendy.

For lunch I had the Carne Asada @ $10, my friends ordered the Camerone Mojo de Ajo (sautéed prawns, $10) and the Crispy Shrimp Tacos @ $6 for 2. My Carne Asada was pretty good. The skirt steak was cooked correctly but the flavors didn't blend together like you expect with Mexican food. The flavors were very compartmentalized, each standing on its own r

Park Kitchen earns high praise

by pearlgirl
Portland Food and Drink has revisited Park Kitchen and has posted a new review that sings the praises of Scott Dolich and company.

Here's a bit about how PFAD reviews restaurants:

Every restaurant gets at least three visits before it is reviewed. I try to have a wide sampling of dishes, and go on different nights of the week. Most are rated on a scale of one to four stars, but if they have been open less than 90 days, I usually wait before rating them and go back in a few months. It is important to me that this site is kept up to date, so I continue to revisit restaurants; my goal is to go back after major changes or at least once a year. Food is a very personal thing, born out of the experiences of your lifetime. I offer these reviews as a general guide so you’ll have an idea what to expect. Just because I like something, that doesn’t mean you will. You may not have the same experience we had. Restaurants are constantly in flux, changing with the s
