I love Extra MSG.. here's a delicious tidbit!
by pearlgirl
From our pals at Extra MSG :
"I just read over on Oregonlive.com that Pho Van Bistro will be closing down temporarily for renovation and re-opening as "Silk". I called to get the details. Currently they're planning on renovating in mid-April. They expect the work to take about a week or two. Primarily they'll be giving the room a more modern look with lighter colors. They'll also be adding a bar where they'll serve mixed drinks, soups, and a new small plates menu. (Taking a lesson from Andina, it seems.) Favorites from the main menu will remain, but they'll be transitioning out some less popular dishes and transitioning in new dishes.
The new Hawthorne Pho Van opens to the public on Wednesday at lunch. They'll be open every day except Mondays for lunch and dinner. Menu is essentially the same as the 82nd store without the 7 Courses of Beef."

I don't know why, but I just keep trying...
by pearlgirl
I'm disappointed in city council candidate Dave Lister (aka "the eastside guy)... again. His opinions and stereotypes of our neighborhood are hard to stomach. Ever the optimist, I decided to visit his website again this morning to learn more about "the eastside guy". This is the quote that spun me out of orbit today:
"We need to return Portland to family-friendliness. People don’t raise children in high rise condominiums. Because state funding is provided on a per student basis, a key component to our school funding problem is declining enrollment. We have been losing at least 500 students per year for nearly a decade. People who are raising children want to live in houses with yards where they can set up swing sets and sandboxes. They want to raise children in an environment where they feel safe and secure in their homes. Most importantly, they want to raise children where they can find and keep a living wage job."
I shouldn't be surprised, I guess..

Silky Smooth Transition
by pearlgirl
A funny thing happened on the way to Happy Hour...
I was on my way to Vino Paradiso , when i saw the sign on the space between Pho Van and Relish. Silk Vietnamese Bistro . WHAT? So, I popped into Relish (which has way too many new and delectible items...) and talked to Trisha and Judy. They confirmed that Pho Van is being re-branded and expanding into the adjacent space. It's not being sold, it will still be owned by the same family... which means it will be great. No word if the menu or interior will change.
More details to come.

Evil Becca Strikes Again...
by pearlgirlCheeky B is evil in the best sense of the word. It is a store of tempting delights... Becca always has something new that makes me exclaim "oh, i NEED that". New this month are lights from Lumen. When lit, they cast a shadow onto the wall. Shown here is the style called Nest, but there are two others: cedar and pine. Fans of Artist Amy Ruppel are sure to love the Nest style. Coincidentally, Becca has three pieces of Amy's work on display at Cheeky B.. all for sale, of course.

TBA...do you wanna?
by pearlgirl
The Time-Based Art Festival barrels into its fourth year with flash, bang, and glow with our new Guest Artistic Director Mark Russell.
This year, TBA also stretches its own boundaries to include and integrate the Visual Arts. From September 7–17, 2006, Portland, Oregon USA will be over-run with theatre, visual art, dance, film, music, and image in locations under bridges, over rivers, in-between cafés, on stages, and throughout the city.
Witness the precise and profound Stan’s Café and their American premiere of "Of All The People In All The World". A room filled with enormous piles of rice, each grain of rice equaling one person, and you are invited to compare the one grain of rice that is you to the millions that are not. It is an ever-changing and ever-constant Festival installation of landscape, statistics, and emotions.
It is the heartbeat of TBA:06.
Let us know if you would like to receive an official guide, volunteer or buy a

Portland, Oregon -- There's no better way to explore a city famed for its culinary hot spots and commitment to fresh, local and sustainable ingredients than by taste. After a sell-out first season, Portland Walking Tour's Epicurean Excursion is back this April offering intimate exploration of the city's hidden epicurean treasures
Led by engaging tour guides brimming with colorful stories, anecdotes and fun facts about the city of Portland, the three-hour tour winds on foot through the Pearl District, a hot urban neighborhood in the heart of the city's old downtown warehouse district. The behind-the-scenes journey invites visitors to:
Ride the Portland streetcar to the edge of the Pearl District for samples of a beverage the city's famous for -- microbrews -- surrounded by the inner workings of Oregon's oldest craft brewery;
Go behind the scenes of an artisan bakery to smell and savor hand-crafted specialties fresh
