Reader Mailbag

by pearlgirl
Occassionally, I will get a question from a Notes subscriber. Chances are, if one person is asking then other people are wondering about the same thing. So here goes:

"...I was searching the web for some photo updates of the construction in the neighborhood, but I came up empty-handed. Are you aware of any site that might have photos of the Metropolitan construction. How is the Bridgeport Brewery remodel coming along and the new building west of the Bridgeport condos. Is the Sitka open, yet?"

I wasn't able to find any web images of the Metropolitan construction site, but I will check around and see what I can find for you. Meanwhile, check out the Metropolitan Website .

The Bridgeport remodel is going well and details are available at the Bridgeport Brewpub Website . Bridgeport is scheduled to reopen in late February 2006, so we'll all be sipping our favorite Bridgeport brews on the loading dock really soon.

The Sitka op

Bye...Buy...Byzantium

by pearlgirl
Molly Culick, owner of Byzantium has decided to close her business. It's sad to see her go, but I know that she will succeed at any new endeavor.

The store will close on February 11th and Molly will be selling all of Byzantium's antique fixtures, fabrics and inventory. That means...RUN, don't walk to Byzantium. Thank Molly for being such a great addition to the Pearl business community and scoop up some great deals.

Overheard on the Streetcar

by pearlgirl
Sometimes, it's refreshing to eavesdrop on conversations when riding the streetcar. I always like listening to tourists talk about our city, neighborhood and mass transit. Last night, I picked up the streetcar at Riverplace and sat next to a couple of gentleman from Detroit.

When they boarded the streetcar, one exclaimed "wow, this is really nice" and went on to say "I wish we had transportation like this in Detroit". They talked about what a great thing it must be to have a downtown core tied together by such a nice means of transportation. As we traveled through downtown, they commented on the construction and said "This is a growing city, all of this construction is absolutely amazing". They guffawed about the downtown core of Detroit and how what we have here would never work there.

Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to have all of the construction and the streetcar. It's always refreshing to see our city through new eyes.

Technology is our friend

by pearlgirl
Don't you hate it when you miss the streetcar by seconds? Now you can have real time streetcar arrival times at your fingertips with Next Bus .

How Next Bus Works
NextBus information is not a static schedule listing — it is actual arrival information, updated at regular intervals. Because traffic variations, breakdowns, and day-to-day problems faced by any transit provider can interrupt service, NextBus was designed to keep you on schedule even if your bus or train isn't.

From the comfort and security of a protected place, you can learn when the next bus will arrive at your stop.

NextBus uses satellite technology and advanced computer modeling to track vehicles on their routes. Each vehicle is fitted with a satellite tracking system.

Taking into account the actual position of the buses, their intended stops, and the typical traffic patterns, NextBus can estimate vehicle arrivals with a high degree of accuracy. This estimate is
