If it's redeveloped, call it the Cab Blocks

by pearlgirl
Thursday, June 30, 2005
By Tim Sullivan

Not quite downtown, not quite Nob Hill and barely out of the clutches of the Pearl District, the blocks under the shadow of Interstate 405 and the Fremont Bridge still bathe in the industry grit that once filled the area. The two biggest cab companies call it home.

Radio Cab runs out of 1613 N.W. Kearney St., a former horse stable now outfitted with a mechanic shop, indoor gas pumps and a car wash. Its checkered cabs pack the company-owned lots. On the surrounding streets, drivers who bought older cabs from the company wedge in their vehicles.

The area seems to bleed checkers -- until you hit Broadway's turf a few blocks north at 1734 N.W. 15th Ave. Bright yellow cabs shine through the chain-link fence in lots under the Fremont Bridge. The garage on the far side -- where 15th hits the train tracks -- is an old maintenance shed equipped with offices and proudly painted in swaths of black and yellow.

To Joe Weston, good investments are a tool to benefit the community

By KRISTINA BRENNEMAN     Issue date: Tue, Jun 28, 2005
The Tribune
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe Weston was just a “snot-nosed kid” in the 1950s when he used $2,500 earned from a paper route to buy a duplex in Northeast Portland.
He still owns the duplex, but he’s added a few more acquisitions over 50 years. Nowadays, Weston owns some $300 million in office buildings and apartments from Raleigh Hills to Lloyd Center.
Though he’s chosen to keep his investments low-key, Weston’s signature is on nearly every mortgage in the Pearl District because of his majority investment in Hoyt Street Properties. And his American Property Management Corp. signs can be spotted on 230 buildings throughout metro Portland.
The company, along with Weston Investment Corp., is based at the Northeast Broadway office Weston built in 1967.

Can Northwest Portland support two newspapers?

by pearlgirl
While surfing on the internet, I found a blog called Metro Blog and saw this interesting article about newspapers in NW Portland. Enjoy!
Gentrifying Northwest Portland and the Pearl District now have two monthly newspapers covering their environs.

The Northwest Examiner is the incumbent. Now in its 19th year, it does not shrink from stories that impact its coverage area - hookers on Burnside, parking garage controversies on NW 23rd, and this month, an exploration of reputedly harmful effects of a weed-killing herbicide applied on the grounds of Washington Park's Hoyt Arboretum.

A few months ago, an old mainstay as well as a talented new find disappeared from The Examiner's masthead. Longtime ad manager Mike Ryerson's departure was, as I recall, announced in a terse "has left the publication." Rosie Key, a feature writer specializing in stories about people who had just moved here, also disappeared from view.

But only temporarily. Key has resurf

Welcome to the new version of "Neighborhood Notes". New colors, new format and a new way to spread the word in The Pearl. At the end of each article, you'll see an envelope icon. If you click on it, you'll be able to send the article above it to a friend. You'll also notice that the most recent articles appear on the right side of the page, along with the site archives. The discussion forum will be available soon, but is temporarily out of service. And finally, you'll find a new link to the River District Community Garden in the "Links" section (on the right side of the page).

Umpqua Bank the Pacific Northwest's largest community bank, is launching a new program called Discover Local Music, which connects Portland customers with the eclectic sounds of the city's vibrant music scene. Starting today, customers who open a new account at the Umpqua Bank Pearl Store have the opportunity to browse Umpqua's Discover Local Music Catalog and create a free custom CD of 10 songs by the region's top artists. The bank plans to roll out the program to the general public at select stores in Oregon, Washington and California and online at www.umpquamusic.com in the fall.

"We are always looking for new ways to provide a unique, meaningful experience to our customers and reach out to the local community," says Ray Davis, Umpqua Bank CEO. Less Sugar, Yet surprisingly sweet

by pearlgirl
Many of you remember Andrew Sugar, the owner of a series of unfortunate restaurant/bars located at 1338 NW Hoyt...the last of which was Fuel . After a long neighborhood battle to close that establishment, the location is home to a new owner and a new restaurant called Olea .

I found the following review online and thought you all might like to read it:

New Olea pushes the food, and beauty, factors higher

Last Friday night at the opening of Olea (1338 N.W. Hoyt St., 503-274-0800), the latest new restaurant in the Pearl District, a strangely large number of the guests looked like they were from Los Angeles.

The women, uniformly trim, tan and blond, wore flashy, expensive-looking clothes and lots of jewelry. The men were equally trim and tan and wore slick suits. I have nothing against L.A.- Iwas there last month and it's fun. But seeing so many L.A. look-alikes in the Pearl makes me wonder: What are they doing here? Are they the
