Presentation Leads Water Blogmistress to Strong Realization
by jenniferd
I had a really neat experience yesterday. I was invited to the adidas campus, located in North Portland, to talk about the excellent quality of Portland's tap water . The folks over at adidas have organized a group of "sustainability ambassadors," who are working to improve "green" practices at their company, from head to toe. The idea is that the ambassadors meet periodically and not only decide on changes they would like to implement company-wide, but also to learn information to transmit to co-workers. I spent about 1/2 hour talking to this group of people about Portland's great tap water and worked on dispelling many of the myths and fears that people have about drinking from the tap . I was delighted that they not only listened incredibly intently to my presentation, but they also asked some great follow-up questions. I could tell that this group was really thinking about what I had told them. They even invited me back for their health fair in October. T

Love in the City » Is Your 'Partner Picker' Broken?
by Love in the City
(Written from one of my fave coffeeshops !) The end of summer is inching closer, fall is just around the corner, and the holidays will soon be upon us. Did you have a summer of love? If yes, keep up the good work. If not, help is on the way! We're starting our dating series, so stay tuned the next couple of weeks, because we're going to create a plan and a system—who wants to spend the holidays alone? Besides, the weather will change soon and nothing beats a warm snuggle, right? Your homework... Take some time and jot down some notes on what has worked, or not worked for you, in past relationships. Look for common themes, patterns and attractions to those intimate partners. Then, take some time and think about the roadblocks standing between you and a successful relationship. Be a voyeur in your own life: think about your story as if it were someone else's. I recommend writing your dating history and then setting it aside. Next, think about the strongest

PDC to spend $5M for Streetcar Engineering
by shooter
The PDC is expected to approve $5M for final engineering of the eastside streetcar extension, even though the Federal government hasn't approved the money to build it. This article from the Oregonian gives some details of the politics involved in getting the Feds to approve $75M for the project. At present, it's held up because the Bush Administration favors buses. In February , the Administration gave tentative approval for $50M, but its uncertain when delivery will occur, possibly after the new administration takes office.
The reason for moving forward without receiving the federal money is to prevent cost increase due to automatic inflation adjustments in the contract. At present, every month of delay costs the city $500K in automatic inflation adjustments.
The project is expected to be completed in 2011.

Grant from Kaiser Permanente Community Fund Puts Local Food on the Menu in Portland Public School and Gervais School Districts
by pearlgirl
The first school assembly of the new academic year will take place today at 10 a.m., at Atkinson Elementary in South East Portland, where school food and education leaders will gather alongside farmers, food producers, grocery retailers and government officials to cheer a grant from the Kaiser Permanente Community Fund at the Northwest Health Foundation that will subsidize approximately 2,640,000 meals with the funds needed to serve more Oregon grown and processed foods in Portland Public Schools and Gervais School Districts. The grant, secured by Ecotrust’s Food and Farms program , will bolster existing efforts to bring more regionally produced food into two distinct school districts in the immediate school year, and kick-off a six-month study to measure the impact of nourishing the minds and bodies of young school children with fresh seasonal produce and locally processed foods, while directing dollars spent to feed Oregon students back into the local economy. New NW Boutique is Absolutely Unique!
by northwest nola
Today I visited what surely must be one of Portland's most unique spaces -- a new boutique art gallery tucked quietly into Northwest Portland. The Life Jacket Design Shop & Gallery, which opened about 6 weeks ago, is home to all things original: one-of-a-kind artwork, mixed media, accessories and home decor. Owner and resident Carol Christensen, a Seattle native who recently relocated to Portland after spending 18 years in New York, is both curator and artisan of this little museum. She will proudly guide you on a tour of her small space, telling you many of the stories that accompany her creative expressions. Carol named the gallery, Life Jacket, at least partially in reference to the fact that it's her new project aimed at taking her mind off of her son going away to college. In essence, it is her "lifejacket," though she is sure to note that she is not quite that desperate! A lifejacket, she thinks, tends to wrap itself around you and keep you above the "st

Water Leak at the Encore Causes Delay
by shooter
The Daily Journal of Commerce reports that a water leak has caused damage in the Encore, delaying the construction schedule. Wood floors were warped throughout the building, the insulation was damaged and the elevator control panel will need to be replaced. The cause was the cracking of a brass casting on a water supply valve on the ninth floor of the building. Because it was able to move through the building via the elevator shafts, the water made its way all the way down to the basement - causing damage throughout. All damaged material will be replaced and a new construction timetable has been set.
