Peter Archer's Hive Project is a large series of paintings which consists of interrelated hexagonal panels. The various canvases explore interconnected themes, and form a cohesive body of work which is greater than any individual painting. The paintings which constitute "Smoking Mirrors," like the others in the Hive Project, are acrylic and watercolor on wood panels, and the grain of the wood is an integral part of the paintings. In many ways, this show is a sequel to and a continuation of the images in "Sleeper Cells" which were shown at Vorpal Space in March of 2007. "Smoking Mirrors" is a reference to an ancient Mayan belief that "every life form holds an equal part of the solution of wholeness, and that every life form reflects every other life form."
Peter Archer is a well known local painter and tattoo artist. He grew up in an artistic family and studied art at at Portland State University, before beginning a career as a tattoo artist which he has pursued for the last 13 years. His work has shown regularly in the Portland area, including adorning the bodies of many prominent locals. This show will be his second solo show at Vorpal Space, following up on the success of "Sleeper Cells" in March of 2007. In addition to his work as a visual artist, Peter is a musician who performs regularly with The Underscore Orkestra. More of his work can be seen at www.myspace.com/freedomfighta47.
