The State of Oregon Pinot
by stockboy
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Oregon wines, especially our Pinot Noir, were reviewed. "We are delighted to report that Oregon Pinot continues its upward trajectory. The difference in the wines over the years is remarkable. We found again and again in this tasting that the wines have developed a confidence and depth that beautifully complement their lovely fruit. The wines have not only a purity of fruit but a purity of vision that is very attractive. Like Burgundy itself, these are wines that speak softly to the more romantic parts of our being." The entire article can be read at Wall Street Journal .

Who's Your Neighborhood Sommelier?
by pearlgirl
Last night's dinner—homemade mushroom soup (shroomies from Portland Farmers Market ) served with rosemary bread—presented a real wine challenge. Oh, we wanted wine, we just weren't sure what to open. So, we called our friendly neighborhood sommelier Timothy Nishimoto for a little advice. I love Tim's willingness to give advice on wine pairings—even when we're calling him from home, instead of dining at his bistro. We're really lucky to have him in the neighborhood! But, it made me wonder where other neighbors get guidance on wine—or do you?

Event Date: 09/10/2008 06:30 PM
Event Location: Ten 01, 1001 NW Couch
Event Location: Ten 01, 1001 NW Couch
On this very special night, Ten 01 will host Silvia Imparato, owner of the Montevetrano Estate, when she arrives in Portland for the first time on September 10th! Proprietress Silvia Imparato indulged in wine as a hobby until she decided to rebuild her family's vineyards in Montevetrano. She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and they have created an outstanding icon wine from the often underestimated region of Campania. Cotarella is particularly proud of this wine; being the very first and most special icon wine he's made, he considers it "The Father" of his reds. For more information about the Montevetrano Estate click here. Silvia Imparato will be on site at Ten 01 for a rare vertical tasting of Montevetrano 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. This one-of-a-kind event will take place at 6:30 pm and is $90/person. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve a spot ASAP. For reservations, please call Ten 01 at (503) 226-3463.

Party Games
by Josie
I like to entertain. The end of a long week is reason to invite some friends over for a relaxing evening. It doesn't require much- you can always get away with a simple meal for an after-work party (at least in my world). Whip up a quick pasta dish with whatever you have on hand; add a few great cheeses, some bread and a salad and you're set. Have someone else bring dessert. And, make sure you have a nice wine to go with (and by nice, I mean whatever you like that fits your budget). But, if you've done that a hundred times, and you're looking for something different to start of the weekend right, host a Friday night wine party. Call five friends who like wine. Ask each one to bring their favorite red wine (or white wine, whichever you prefer) and their favorite cheese. Instruct them to wrap the wine in a paper bag, with no label visible. Set out plates and glasses, along with a couple baguettes and some olives. When everyone arrives, you pour the masked wines, in random order. Try to

You Go, Grill!!!
by pearlgirl
by Timothy Nishimoto sommelier at Vino Paradiso Condo life is great, isn't it? Gone is the back-breaking yard work and nightmares of a busted furnace or a flooded basement. The memories of horizontal living are fading, but many of us just can't shake the romantic notion of the Sunday backyard barbeque and our reign at the brick altar—otherwise known as the true man's grill . If you're like me, the brick altar and backyard are gone, but dreams of barbequed ribs and the perfect wine or ice-cold beer persevere. Armed with a few simple tips on matching grilled meat slathered in barbeque sauce to the perfect wine, you can confidently host a memorable barbeque in the Pearl. Barbeque Whites, The Epiphany It's hard to imagine drinking white wine with barbequed ribs, but at a barbeque several years ago, after all the beer was gone, the only thing left to drink with my ribs was Sokol Blosser "Evolution." That evening, I became hooked on the combination and ha
