Keep Cool In Neighborhood Pools

by pearlgirl
12_sweat Portlanders can find relief from temperatures over 100 degrees today and tomorrow by taking refuge in their city's parks and pools. From a shady walk in Forest Park to a picnic dinner under the trees in your neighborhood park, from a dip in a community pool to a splash in a spray fountain, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) offers many free or inexpensive opportunities to escape from the heat.

To help the public beat the summer heat, in addition to PP&R's twelve community pools, there are extended hours at wading pools for young children, as well as free spray features in the city's parks to help children have a safe and cool summer. For those that prefer parks and trails to pools, there are also thousands of shade-providing trees and over 10,000 acres of parks and natural areas where Portlanders can catch a breeze.

For members of the public participating in sports and other strenuous activities during extreme hot weather, Parks officials advise t

Twilight Criterium: Thrills and a few Spills

by shooter
twilight-criterium-primary I went to my first Twilight Criterium Friday. I wasn't sure what to expect, but wanted to try photographing this kind of sports event.

It was really fun! Watching the riders race on a short track, through the streets, was exciting. As a spectator, it was great, because each lap took about a minute—I saw lots of action. It was fun to shoot for the very same reason. Shooting the race did have its challenges though. The combination of speed and twilight meant finding the right balance of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to stop the action and get a crisp image. I avoided using a flash, because I wasn't sure how much that would affect the riders. I worried about riders getting a flash in the eyes while in the apex of a turn, because of some guy (me) lying on the sidewalk trying to get that up close angle. Next time I'll use a flash part of the time, but I think I will still avoid it when I'm close to the riders. If any participants out there want to provide inp

Event Location: Portland Bridges
bridge pedal 2008 The 13th annual Providence Bridge Pedal will be held on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008. Join us for your annual opportunity to bike over Portland's Willamette River bridges, including the top decks of the Fremont and Marquam bridges. Earlier this year, Portland received platinum designation recognizing the city's efforts to accommodate Portland cyclists. Portland is the only major city in the country to receive this highest rating by the League of American Bicyclists. Come join the celebration! Register here . Changes for 2008 The Steel and Morrison bridges will not be available for crossing this year due to city upgrades and construction projects. In addition, the congestion some riders experienced last year has led to some significant improvements in this year's Providence Bridge Pedal. We now have: * More room on the road, including two full lanes for biking on the Ross Island Bridge
* Adjusted start times to avoid merging of multiple cyclist groups
* A more c

The Night Ride

by pearlgirl
Event Date: 07/12/2008 08:00 PM
Event Location: Lucky Lab, NW 19th & Quimby
TNR_logo This mostly flat, 15-mile street ride takes you past hootin' and hollerin' night life and fire jugglers, through a disco party rest stop and along spectacular cityscape views to an all-you-can-eat midnight doughnut finish line feast. A fundraiser for Bike Transportation Alliance . Streets are open to cars and you must obey rules of the road. Support is extremely limited, so please bring your own supplies to be comfortable, such as extra clothing and a bag/pannier to carry your personal items. Light and helmets are required for this ride. Due to the late night nature of this ride, is not recommended for children unless they have extensive experience riding on city streets. Learn more about the Night Ride and watch a video!
