Portland A Community Leader

by stockboy
"L.A. could learn a thing or two from Portland... The city is a veritable transit utopia where light rail goes to the airport, parking restrictions increase public transit use and free streetcar service benefits downtown businesses. It also has a 20-year head start on planning. By Steve Hymon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer August 18, 2008 I recently spent a long weekend in Portland, Ore. It was hard not to marvel at all the things that city does well on the transportation front. I began to wonder what elements could be applied here." To read the entire article check out the LA Times story.

Portland In the National News... Again!

by stockboy
portland-topper USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .

Portland Streetcar in the New York Times

by shooter
streetcar-on-11th A story from the NY Times highlights cities that are planning to construct a streetcar system and mentions the usual reason why—they spur growth and development. Of course, Portland Streetcar gets lots of love! Critics contend that the development doesn't come without significant subsidies. I see some truth in both sides of the argument.

Streetcars foster the 20-minute neighborhood , where within a 20-minute walk your daily needs can be met. In the suburbs, you need your car for pretty much everything, but in a high-density neighborhood you can easily avoid using a car for most daily errands. Streetcar advocates have been touting this for years, but it seems that even with today's soaring fuel costs, critics still don't believe it. Perhaps they should look at TriMet's increasing ridership .

Seattle's public toilet project is flushed away, Portland's "Randy" gets installed next month

by shooter
roman-pub-toilet Seattle's attempt at providing public toilets has gone down the drain. The toilets will close August 1st and the structures sold for $89,000 each. It turns out that the maintenance costs were too high and toilets were so dirty even the homeless wouldn't use them.

The New York Times story says other cities public toilet programs have fared better because the maintenance contracts are offset with advertising contracts and overall they haven't had the same issues keeping the toilets clean as Seattle did. Because of a law in Seattle, the maintenance costs could not be offset by advertising contracts so taxpayers paid for the entire cost.

Portland is mentioned in the story for Randy Leonard's cheaper toilet design. If his design catches on maybe we should call them "The Randy" kind of like the Brits call their toilets "The Loo". I'll leave the obvious jokes to others...

Portland among America's best for design

by shooter
You knew this had to be true... From the Portland Business Journal : Portland is among the top five best cities for architecture and design, according to an independent study conducted by one of the world's leading architectural practices. Looking at 10 criteria including architecture awards, "green" design and public transit systems, New York-based RMJM Hillier, the North American division of the worldwide architecture firm RMJM, selected 10 cities leading the way in design policy and practice. Then the firm commissioned public opinion and research firm Zogby International to interview more than 1,000 residents of those cities on architecture and design issues and incorporated those results into the research to determine the final rankings. Chicago came out on top. Portland ranked No. 5. Read the full story .
