Learn to make an elegant, soft-covered book. One of the oldest binding methods known, the Coptic bound book lies flat when opened and has an attractive exposed spine and stitching. Choose from a selection of decorative papers or leather for your cover, and then sew your book together with coordinating or contrasting colored thread using the medieval link stitch. Perhaps one of the most exciting art book forms, a " tunnel " or " peephole " book is a set of pages bound with accordions on either side and a fixed perspective or hole for the viewer to gaze through. Participants will learn the basics of constructing a tunnel book and explore the exciting possibilities for adapting this format to their personal creative vision. Become familiar with basic bookbinding and paper art tools and techniques. Experiment with paper cutting, layering, and adhering to achieve a three dimensional vision in paper.Instructor: Rory Sparks

Shop Talk – The Paper Station

I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago).
