Presentation Leads Water Blogmistress to Strong Realization

by jenniferd
water-scarce I had a really neat experience yesterday. I was invited to the adidas campus, located in North Portland, to talk about the excellent quality of Portland's tap water . The folks over at adidas have organized a group of "sustainability ambassadors," who are working to improve "green" practices at their company, from head to toe. The idea is that the ambassadors meet periodically and not only decide on changes they would like to implement company-wide, but also to learn information to transmit to co-workers. I spent about 1/2 hour talking to this group of people about Portland's great tap water and worked on dispelling many of the myths and fears that people have about drinking from the tap . I was delighted that they not only listened incredibly intently to my presentation, but they also asked some great follow-up questions. I could tell that this group was really thinking about what I had told them. They even invited me back for their health fair in October. T

Help Your Neighborhood School!

by pearlgirl
hogpvert5 On Saturday, August 23, there is a fabulous opportunity to help your local school—and it won't cost you a dime! Bring your tools! Your support is needed to get Portland Public Schools ready for a new school year. Join your neighbors and local school communities and enhance and beautify school buildings and grounds. Volunteers will spread mulch and bark chips, trim bushes, edge grass, clean up litter and complete a number of other tasks to make the school more welcoming for incoming students and the communities around them. Bring your own tools: gloves, weeding tools, shovels, or anything else you have that would help the effort. Please make sure your tools are labeled! Water and snacks will be provided. We're back...

by shooter
computer crash It didn't have anything to do with the Neighborhood Notes website, one of our office computers crashed. All the data was recovered, nothing was lost except for the time to figure out what happened, reinstall the operating system, and then restore the data. Unfortunately, this took most of the day.

When something like this happens it is a good reality check about back up. If you don't do it regularly, you should. Your life will be much easier when your computer crashes—and it will. I've been through it a few times. Sometimes it's not so bad, like today, where nothing was lost and everything was restored. Other times you lose important data.

Those are the worst.

If you don't have a back up plan, make one. On a Mac with Leopard, you can use Time Machine to automatically schedule backups. I'm sure there are more than enough applications on Windows to do something very similar. Hard drives are cheap, important data is priceless.

Most Portland Public Schools make the grade under tougher No Child Left Behind standards

by pearlgirl
carolesmith From the desk of: Superintendent Carole Smith... Every August, under the federal government's No Child Left Behind law, the state rates each of our schools against dozens of standards that track student achievement in reading and math, attendance, graduation rates and how many students take the standardized tests. The ratings for 2007-08 came out today: More than 70 percent of PPS schools hit the mark, compared to 61 percent overall in Oregon. Once again, Portland students and schools were stronger than the Oregon average. It was unusually tough for schools to meet AYP for 2007-08, because 60 percent of students had to meet state reading and math standards, up from 50 percent the year before. That change alone tripped up many Oregon schools. Here are a few highlights of this year's results for Portland Public Schools:   Our schools that serve students in elementary and middle grades continue to perform well, especially in comparison to their counterparts statewide. Portland School Board takes steps to finance facilities and IT upgrades

by pearlgirl
apple-full  The volunteer Portland School Board approved a resolution Monday that enables Portland Public Schools to move forward with the repair of its aging and deteriorating facilities and the needed upgrade of computers and software. The board authorized the district to reimburse up to $50 million in costs it might incur between now and the completion of subsequent debt financing. The board has voiced its intent to seek a capital bond to fund needed repairs, renovation or rebuilding of Portland Public Schools' 90-plus schools and other facilities, and better support the educational and technological needs of students. Portland Public School buildings are 67 years old, on average. Nationally, school buildings are an average age of 45 years old. Director David Wynde, the board's point person on the facilities work, said: "This decision gives us the ability to start tackling some of the needed improvements now. It will save money by allowing us to recover funds we may need to use i

PSU students go green in Pearl

by shooter
I remember a similar experience when I was doing my MBA. We did a project as a business looking to enter into a new market. At the end we presented our analysis to a group of industry professionals and received their feedback. It was incredibly insightful getting that commentary from people who are doing that kind of work in the real world.

Motivating these architecture students to think about sustainability now, and having their designs critiqued and challenged by industry professionals will have a lasting impression on them. Even if the critique was harsh, they will learn valuable lessons. Let's hope PSU continues to partner with local professionals to give their students a touch of real world experience. From the Daily Journal of Commerce : Before designing a building in the Pearl District, Jamie Tausen studied the site and created an artifact. "The artifact was used to explain our site concept, which we discovered in the site analysis," said Tausen

Urban Biking Workshop

by nancy
Event Date: 06/24/2008 05:30 AM
Event Location: Bicycle Transportation Alliance, 233 NW 5th Ave, Portland
I just blogged about Kidical Mass, and promoted Bicycle Transportation Alliance and their biker education courses. So, I figured at least one event should go up so you can see how great they are. Here's
something that I pulled off the Pedalpalooza Calendar . When you were a kid you probably biked, and it was easy. You did it barefoot. With an ice cream in one hand. No sweat.

Now you look around you and think "Biking? Around all these cars? Scary!"

Biking in the city doesn't have to be scary, despite all the cars. In this workshop we'll go over the skills that will make you safer and more comfortable on the road.

We'll also cover basic bike laws, necessary gear, and route finding.

No actual bicycles or roads involved however - just bring your questions, and we'll send you off with maps and newfound confidence that you can do it. 5:30 - 6:30 June 24th. Contact is Stephanie Noll, stephaniebta4bikes, 503-226-0676 x23
