Healthy Bottom Line | April is Cancer Control Month
by pearlgirl
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. for men, and it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the U.S., exceeded only by lung cancer. Bruce Lowe, M.D., a leader in robotic surgery for treating prostate cancer, says early detection can lead to a high success rate for treating the disease.
Risk Factors
• Age is the strongest risk factor. The chance of developing prostate cancer increases rapidly after age 50.
• Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-American men than in men of other races.
• Prostate cancer seems to run in some families, suggesting an inherited or genetic factor.
• Men who eat a lot of red meat or high-fat dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer.
You can find out more information during, New Frontiers in Prostate Cancer Therapy, Wednesday, April 2, from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital. Greg McCoy, M.D. and Mark Schray, M.D. will discuss prostate cancer and the latest treatment options including a video presentation on robotic surgery, brachytherapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy. The class is free and open to the public. Please call 503-335-3500 to register.
