Notes of Interest » November 18 Bookmarks

by pearlgirl
books Our intent was to have these bookmarks up this morning, but technology threw us a curveball. Funny, funny. Anyhoo, yesterday we bookmarked five Portland-related topics that we thought you might dig: BikePortland.org has launched its very own online bookstore in partnership with a local bookseller, the US Green Building Council has upgraded its 2009 LEED rating system, Portland-based Shizzow began shouting in San Francisco (add that to your geektionary!), Architect Ben Waechter left his mark on a Northeast Portland neighborhood, and Portland Center Stage questions what role design and technology will play in the future. Follow the links below and read all about it. Visit me on Ma.gnolia Check out all of our bookmarks on ma.gnolia

Thank you Nuvrei + photos

by nancy
IMG_4772 Nuvrei gave a spectacular class on marzipan molding and decorating yesterday at Isobel's Clubhouse . Thank you to Nuvrei owners for organizing this and donating time and materials, to Lynnette and Ken for making the introduction and much appreciation for Brian F., Emi, Levi and Brian R. who gave hands on instruction and coaching to the kids. The parents had a great time as well. They enjoyed connecting with the staff, asking questions about their favorite pastries, and learning more about the special desserts Nuvrei has developed for Thanksgiving. Brian R. volunteered to take photos, and really captured the joy and focus on the kids faces. Check them out on our flickr page .

Flock and Tumble

by CHYCHELE
IMG_6919 Flock and Tumble made it's debut this past weekend at Audio Cinema . Flock and Tumble, a collage of movement, music, lights, and video inspired by animal movements and social behaviors, was created by Seth Nehil who master minded the whole shebang. Linda Austin, of Performance Works NorthWest , contributed choreography. The performers flocked, swarmed, and occasionally tumbled to Nehil's compositions containing ambient sounds, while the video, featuring the highly awesome Seattle/Portland dance group Wooly Mammoth Comes to Dinner , was flickered on the several walls behind them. And CHYCHELE Event Design was there to help pull it all together. All in all it was an experimental evening not to be missed. But if you did miss it, or you just want to know more about the making of Flock and Tumble go here .

Cock in the Pearl

by roxanne
DSCN1737_3 Sometimes there is just no good reason as to why or how things occur. For example, did you ever wonder why the Cock with the big shoes sits on the chair in the window of the Sheepskin of Oregon store in the Pearl? Well, according to one of the store employees, the Cock was given to the owner of the store as a gift and has been sitting in the store window ever since, modeling sheepskin shoes. It is unclear as to who might have fitted Cock for these shoes, but they are awfully big. It appears that Cock has become a mascot of sorts. Another interesting thought: Cock has been a silent observer of all of the changes that have taken place on Glisan Street over the years. Can you believe the store has been in the Pearl for 30 years--long before The Pearl was called "The Pearl." Wonder what Cock would say if he could talk? Photo: Roxanne Mossman

loo mock drawing The city's first Portland Loo will be unveiled on 12/8/2008, as Commissioner Randy Leonard takes the first flush! The Portland Loo is the brainchild of Commissioner Leonard who saw a growing global problem and sought out a novel, local solution. His philosophy is, "When you gotta go, you gotta go." Commissioner Leonard recognizes that all humans are entitled to a little dignity when taking care of such private business. The Loos are: Lightweight: The unit is composed of a minimal materials. Utilizing stainless steel wall panels mounted to a slim profile structure means that the Portland Loo weighs a fraction of a typical restroom and can be delivered on site as a complete enclosure. Open: Louvers at the top and bottom of the wall create an interior environment that offers complete user privacy, while remaining as connected with the outside as possible. The lower louvers are angled to provide law enforcement the opportunity to observe the number of
