Our intent was to have these bookmarks up this morning, but technology threw us a curveball. Funny, funny. Anyhoo, yesterday we bookmarked five Portland-related topics that we thought you might dig: BikePortland.org has launched its very own online bookstore in partnership with a local bookseller, the US Green Building Council has upgraded its 2009 LEED rating system, Portland-based Shizzow began shouting in San Francisco (add that to your geektionary!), Architect Ben Waechter left his mark on a Northeast Portland neighborhood, and Portland Center Stage questions what role design and technology will play in the future. The city's first Portland Loo will be unveiled on 12/8/2008, as Commissioner Randy Leonard takes the first flush! The Portland Loo is the brainchild of Commissioner Leonard who saw a growing global problem and sought out a novel, local solution. His philosophy is, "When you gotta go, you gotta go." Commissioner Leonard recognizes that all humans are entitled to a little dignity when taking care of such private business. The Loos are: Lightweight: The unit is composed of a minimal materials. Utilizing stainless steel wall panels mounted to a slim profile structure means that the Portland Loo weighs a fraction of a typical restroom and can be delivered on site as a complete enclosure. Open: Louvers at the top and bottom of the wall create an interior environment that offers complete user privacy, while remaining as connected with the outside as possible. Tutors, Mentors Needed

The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth. One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting. We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center. Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. 2008 Spirit of Portland Award winners announced

A group of 21 Portland individuals/organizations who have helped make our city shine have been named recipients of the Spirit of Portland Awards this year. In addition, nine others were chosen by Mayor Tom Potter to win the Mayor's Awards. All 30 winners will be recognized during an award ceremony Dec.11 at City Hall.

A Look into the Process of Creativity Stirs Excitement

Inner Journeys: The Magic of Spontaneous Expression opened on First Thursday, November 6th at Anka Gallery Unlike other gallery exhibits, the paintings in this exhibit were never intended to be viewed. Rather, they are visual expressions of inner creative journeys contributed by the students and teacher of artspace, an experiential painting studio in S.E. Portland. The Paintings highlight spontaneous expression in a journey of discovery and exploration. These paintings provide a window into the process of creativity, deepening our understanding of flow, and of the impediments encountered. The First Thursday exhibit was an "amazing" success. Most people who came through...and there were many...really understood the heart ofthis exhibit and enjoyed talking about the process of creativity in their own lives. There were some interesting tidbits in today's news: a backyard favorite is listed as a harmful invader—don't be fooled by the butterflies and sweet fragrance, this plant is a killer. USPS is raising its shipping rates. This year, it really pays to ship things during, not after, the holidays. Metropolis Cycle Shop and Pedal Bike Tours share a new North Portland space. You might say it's a tandem arrangement. (eyeroll) A Portland holiday tradition goes green with the help of LED lighting.
