Notes of Interest » November 18 Bookmarks

by pearlgirl
books Our intent was to have these bookmarks up this morning, but technology threw us a curveball. Funny, funny. Anyhoo, yesterday we bookmarked five Portland-related topics that we thought you might dig: BikePortland.org has launched its very own online bookstore in partnership with a local bookseller, the US Green Building Council has upgraded its 2009 LEED rating system, Portland-based Shizzow began shouting in San Francisco (add that to your geektionary!), Architect Ben Waechter left his mark on a Northeast Portland neighborhood, and Portland Center Stage questions what role design and technology will play in the future. Follow the links below and read all about it. Visit me on Ma.gnolia Check out all of our bookmarks on ma.gnolia

Tutors, Mentors Needed

by Trace
The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth. One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting. We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center. Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. Members of the business community provide job tours and / or job shadowing experiences in

by Calendar Girl
Event Date: 12/10/2008 07:30 PM
Event Location: Sydney’s, 1800 NW 16th Ave.
diy Do It Yourself Stories is a social storytelling forum hosted by David Vanadia. DIY Stories comes in several varieties: 1. A monthly open stage where you can listen and tell real-life stories about anything and everything. 2. Themed shows where people gather to share stories about a particular topic. 3. Curated shows in which a select group of individuals present stories in front of a live audience.
How It Began Do It Yourself Stories began in December of 2006. The show was inspired by similar storytelling events that happen across the country but was designed to foster creativity over competition and community instead of cliques. Storytelling for the people, by the people. Mark your calendar! Bring your friends, bring your stories. The more the merrier! 8-10 Stories
No cover in December.

Event Location: 1425 NW 16th
Indoor Active Play on Tuesdays is at Pearl Court Activity Center from 10:00 - 11:30. Play starts at 10:00. At 11:15 we begin to clean up and the event ends at 11:30. Indoor Active Play is for children of all ages and their families. We'll run, make noise, play with balls, dance to music and create games. Pearl Court Activity Center's owner has kindly loaned us use of his storage room, so we're able to store toys and play items. Please do bring music and toys that you'd like to share. We welcome cash donations to defray the cost of renting this space. Donations are returned to Zimmerman Community Center which generously rented the space. Pearl Court Activity Center is located at 1425 NW 16th between Pettygrove and Quimby. Free parking is available in front of the building. Heres additional information about Indoor Active Play.
