Portland Neighborhood Wallpaper for Your Computer

In 2008, we captured some really great photos of Portland's neighborhoods and have selected our 15 favorites to share with you. We invite you to download the images from our Flickr photo gallery and use them as your computer wallpaper. Enjoy! About the photographs All of these photos were taken using a technique called high dynamic range (HDR). Each photograph is a composite of over and under-exposed images, combined into a single photograph on the computer. This technique provides extraordinary detail in the shadows and highlights, far beyond what a single image can capture. In addition, some images were also shot using a digital camera adapted to shoot in infrared—a spectrum of light not visible to the human eye. If you have been thinking about seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , run, don't walk to see this remarkable film on the big screen. The film was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club) and based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story of the same title. Fitzgerald wrote that the story was inspired by a comment made by Mark Twain that it was "a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end." The film has the kind of voyeuristic feel of early Truman Capote or Carson McCullers, whose fiction always seemed to capture a microcosm of humanity that was both fascinating and exposing of the dark underbelly of the deep south. Benjamin Button is an emotionally complex epic, touching all of the deep places in the heart. It is a well-told tale that centers around the big themes in life; love, separation, fear of differences, and vulnerability related to aging and mortality, to name a few. Slightly off-kilter playwright Steen has taken on yet another massive topic with his newest work--the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley Jr. But rather than tackle the event head-on, The Old Man, The Goat, & The Son of a Bitch delves into the subplots and zeitgeist that delivered that staggering event on March 30, 1981. The IFCC will be hosting a Gallery Exhibit and Marketplace to celebrate and commemorate this occasion. Kwanzaa Gallery Exhibit African/African-American Artists from our community will join this year's gallery in a collective art showcase. Alongside their art they will share NIA (purpose) of their craft. Gallery visitors are encouraged to share their purpose in this interactive exhibit. Kenton's Own: Dancin' Bare

We had just grabbed a bench seat near one of the stages at the Dancin' Bare when the DJ told the crowd to put their hands together for the amateurs. A blonde girl sauntered on center stage, took an effortless swing around the pole, then glided to the edge, leaning over the rail to meet the men and women who would be tipping her. She was cool and comfortable in her enormous, clear plastic platforms and when she started to take off her clothes to Pantera's Cemetery Gates she was was as efficient and deliberate as a pro. Either she'd been practicing in front of a mirror for months, or she'd done this a few times. In fact, all but one of the amateurs we watched that night looked pretty comfortable in their bared skin. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. I'd hoped to see someone who had lost a bet or a middle-age business exec who had just realized her true calling was to be on a stage, nude. Apparently, that's rarely the case.
