Portland Neighborhood Wallpaper for Your Computer
by pearlgirl
In 2008, we captured some really great photos of Portland's neighborhoods and have selected our 15 favorites to share with you. We invite you to download the images from our Flickr photo gallery and use them as your computer wallpaper. Enjoy! About the photographs All of these photos were taken using a technique called high dynamic range (HDR). Each photograph is a composite of over and under-exposed images, combined into a single photograph on the computer. This technique provides extraordinary detail in the shadows and highlights, far beyond what a single image can capture. In addition, some images were also shot using a digital camera adapted to shoot in infrared—a spectrum of light not visible to the human eye. These photographs were finished with hand coloring in Photoshop. Sunlan Lighting, Boise Ladd's Addition, Hosford-Abernethy Skidmore Fountain, Old Town Chinatown

Cinema Junkies » The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
by roxanne
If you have been thinking about seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , run, don't walk to see this remarkable film on the big screen. The film was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club) and based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story of the same title. Fitzgerald wrote that the story was inspired by a comment made by Mark Twain that it was "a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end." The film has the kind of voyeuristic feel of early Truman Capote or Carson McCullers, whose fiction always seemed to capture a microcosm of humanity that was both fascinating and exposing of the dark underbelly of the deep south. Benjamin Button is an emotionally complex epic, touching all of the deep places in the heart. It is a well-told tale that centers around the big themes in life; love, separation, fear of differences, and vulnerability related to aging and mortality, to name a few. In short, this is a moving story you can really sink

For Those About to ShanRock- We Salute YOU!
by NoPo Ness
Looking for a way to cut loose a bit on a week night? Nothing too severe you think- too much tequila and a spontaneous trip to Tijuana seem out of your grasp mid-week. Consider yourself the Cliff Clavin of the hipster set? Do you know whose business is it that it's Istanbul not Costantinople? Do you know who Angelina Jolie's first husband was? Have you memorized every episode of the Ben Stiller show? Then you probably know P-town's coolest, self-proclaimed Trivia Jock, ShanRock (aka Shannon Donaldson) the host of Triviology events all over Portland. Starting out three years ago at Peter's 19th Hole on NE Fremont she has since spread her brand of trivia all over P-town, successfully parlaying it into a full-time job that provides her sole income. ShanRock's got so much game that she's hosted fundraisers for FirstBook and ECO as well as pub quizzes for Wordstock, PSU, the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland Elvis' birthday party and the Annual Barfly Trivia Bus. Event Location: Disjecta, 8371 N Interstate
There's theater and then there's Charles Steen Theater. Slightly off-kilter playwright Steen has taken on yet another massive topic with his newest work--the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley Jr. But rather than tackle the event head-on, The Old Man, The Goat, & The Son of a Bitch delves into the subplots and zeitgeist that delivered that staggering event on March 30, 1981. Steen's unique dialogue and imagination bring us a comic-spy drama set in the Hotel Hilton in the hours prior to the shooting. Charles Augustus Steen III is a Canadian born playwright from a very American family and the grandson of the Uranium King of New Mexico. He is the author of seven plays, the most notorious of which, The Tragical History of Audrey Geisel or How The Grinch Plagiarized My Goddamn Children's Story, wowed audiences in 2007. Fri-Sun, December 5th-7th & Fri-Sun, December 12th-14thDoors at 7:30 pm, Curtain at 8 pm SHARP! $10 / Tickets available at disje

Kenton's Own: Dancin' Bare
by Allison
We had just grabbed a bench seat near one of the stages at the Dancin' Bare when the DJ told the crowd to put their hands together for the amateurs. A blonde girl sauntered on center stage, took an effortless swing around the pole, then glided to the edge, leaning over the rail to meet the men and women who would be tipping her. She was cool and comfortable in her enormous, clear plastic platforms and when she started to take off her clothes to Pantera's Cemetery Gates she was was as efficient and deliberate as a pro. Either she'd been practicing in front of a mirror for months, or she'd done this a few times. In fact, all but one of the amateurs we watched that night looked pretty comfortable in their bared skin. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. I'd hoped to see someone who had lost a bet or a middle-age business exec who had just realized her true calling was to be on a stage, nude. Apparently, that's rarely the case.

NoPo Galleries
by NoPo Ness
North Portland has become a magnet for struggling artist types as one of the last bastions of affordability. It is only fitting then that the arts community would want to hang out in their own hood. From the shops on Historic Mississippi Avenue who provide alternative spaces for local artists to feature their work to the new full-fledged galleries freshly opened- we've got art in the 5Q. www.ifcc-arts.org Not only is this a killer venue for live theater but it also houses a gallery. The IFCC just celebrated it anniversary with a very cool 80's themed celebration called Delirious. (Where it just so happens my husband was crowned Homecoming King for his stylish "Flock of Seagulls" hairdo!) This venue provides a space for some of the most diverse art you'll see in the city.
