***IMPORTANT*** Winter Tips from the Portland Water Bureau

Okay kiddies -- here's the scoop: the weather is cold, cold, freezing cold. You need to protect your plumbing or you could end up with a miserable, watery situation on your hands....please just trust me on this one! I've seen it too many times. No one wants frozen and/or exploding plumbing in the middle of a snowstorm. It's just not fun. Outside Plumbing Caulk around pipes where they enter the house. Close all foundation vents. Cut wood or Styrofoam blocks to fill vent openings, then slide them into the vents. (You'll want to open the vents again in the spring to prevent dry rot.) Protect outside pipes and faucets. If you have a separate shut off valve for an outside faucet, consider shutting it off and draining it for the winter. If you don't have a separate valve to turn off faucets, you can wrap outside faucets or hose bibs with insulation . Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO) announces funds available to nonprofit organizations and schools whose work supports the mission ofHPSO—dedicated to helping special gardens of botanical, horticultural or historic interest, including the support of schools and community gardens. We provide free workshops to help people naturescape their yard on their own. Even if you discover that you will need the help of a landscaper or designer with your project, you'll have the framework to help make decisions and communicate your desires to your contractor. Our naturescaping workshops are hosted by interested individuals, neighborhood associations, and other community organizations. Experienced facilitators and landscape designers lead these four-hour, weekend workshops that include a visit to a neighborhood naturescaping project to see design principles in action. Every participant receives a comprehensive workbook and a native plant to help them get started. In this introductory workshop we introduce the concept of naturescaping. We also discuss time and maintenance savings, reduction/elimination of water and chemical use, increasing and improving wildlife habitat, watershed stewardship, and basic site or project planning, as well as many other great gardening tips.

Upcoming workshops about Metro's Nature in Neighborhood grant program hopes to inspire innovative projects and partnerships in communities wishing to improve livability at the neighborhood level through greater access to nature. Metro's Nature in Neighborhoods capital grants program funds projects that preserve or enhance natural features and their ecological functions on public lands in neighborhoods and help ensure that every community enjoys clean water and nature as an element of its character and livability. The Metro Council awarded approximately $390,000 in August 2008 to three capital grants projects for its first year of funding. The Nature in Neighborhoods restoration and enhancement grants program is focused on helping individuals, community groups or schools in on-the-ground active watershed restoration or environmental education. This weekend is the Portland Antique Expo , which runs Saturday and Sunday over at the Expo Center (Early Bird admission on Friday). I'm a huge fan of this show, especially the July one – in addition to 1500 indoor booths, there are an additional 300 or so booths out in the parking lot and that's where the best finds are. read the full article
