Announcing Indoor Active Play

by nancy
cami curtis studio Families that live, work, learn and play in central Portland can enjoy three additional options for indoor active play this fall and winter. We have three generous donors to thank for making this happen;  Cami Curtis Performing Art Center ,  Perfectly Pearl Modern Bridal Event , and  Zimmerman Community Center . These community based businesses all understand that families need a safe, warm, dry place to play when the weather's bad. Cami Curtis Performing Art Center is donating the use of one of their dance studios. They also offer many great classes for kids, taught by talented teachers in this beautiful space. For pictures and more info, please visit  www.camicurtis.com Perfectly Pearl Modern Bridal Event raised funds in Spring 2008 to purchase Indoor Active Play. There are still funds left from this donation, and they're again being used to purchase time at Pearl Court Activity Center. Zimmerman Community Center is purchasing time at Pearl Court Activity Ce

Kidical Mass Frequently Asked Questions

by nancy
kidical Lots of folks are curious about Kidical Mass . Here are  Bicycle Transportation Alliance 's answers to frequently asked questions:
Is this just like Critical Mass but with kids? Absolutely not. We are a family friendly law-abiding ride. Our purpose is to teach kids, parents and caregivers safety skills and provide a ride in which to practice them. We are creating awareness for the growing presence of kids and families on bikes and the need for all road users to respect other users of the road. We are also bringing together families who bike in an effort to provide a positive community experience that will show children how much fun riding your bike can be! Are we required to have a parade permit to ride in KM? No. We are riding as a group, following all traffic laws and are not required to have a permit since we are not purposefully stopping traffic or blocking traffic. It's true we may be slow as snails and therefore slow traffic, but bikes are allowed to ri

Fire Safety for Families

by nancy
IMG_0746 Thanks so much to  Fire Station 3  for hosting neighborhood families yesterday. The Fire Fighters, especially Fire Fighter Jason, did a great job of engaging the children, meeting them at their level, and mixing up fun with safety education. Given the large group – 17 kids with mothers and a few fathers - were all impressed with how much we learned. We even came away with specific ideas for how to make our building communities safer. Here are some  photos of the gathering .  One of the first things the kids learned was that if they hear a smoke detector alarm they should Get Out, Stay Out and Go To Your Meeting Place. Meeting place? None of us had meeting places. But most of us had chosen one by the time the tour was over. And a few buildings had even talked about a ‘Family Meeting Place’ where all the families would go if we had to evacuate our buildings. Kids also practiced dialing 911 (and memorizing the number

Fire Station Tour 3:30 Today!

by nancy
Event Date: 09/15/2008 03:30 PM
Event Location: 1715 NW Johnson Street (Station 3)
Last week Fire Station 3's crew pulled up to Ben & Jerry's for a cool treat on a hot day. A group of us at Isobel's Clubhouse walked over to take a tour of the fire engine. Fireman Ed asked the kids great questions about fire safety, and it got us thinking. Does your kid know to call 911 in an emergency?Crawl to your apartment/condo's front door rather than walk? Have you used the stairwell in your building to familiarize your family with an emergency exit when the elevators are not available? These are not topics that we as parents like to think about. But our kids need to learn, and it's a lot more fun with a group.  Please join us for a tour of Fire Station 3 (for fun) and a conversation with the staff (for tips especially for kids who live in multifamily dwellings). We're meeting at  Fire Station 3  at 3:30 on September 15th. For those of you keeping track, Isobel's Clubhouse will be closed on 9/15 so we can take this important field trip.
