Notes of Interest » November 19 Bookmarks

genoa Yesterday's news highlights were a tad bittersweet: a touching tribute to the life and times of Genoa (closing on Saturday after 38 years in business), Peacock Lane embraces a new holiday tradition, OMSI announces staff cuts (after sharing its expansion plans over the weekend), and the bike boulevard planned for NE Going Street has received overwhelming resident support. What a difference a little time makes, huh? photo: Oregonian Visit me on Ma.gnolia Check out all of our bookmarks on ma.gnolia

Notes of Interest » November 17 Bookmarks

by pearlgirl
medium_butterflybush20 There were some interesting tidbits in today's news: a backyard favorite is listed as a harmful invader—don't be fooled by the butterflies and sweet fragrance, this plant is a killer. USPS is raising its shipping rates. This year, it really pays to ship things during, not after, the holidays. Metropolis Cycle Shop and Pedal Bike Tours share a new North Portland space. You might say it's a tandem arrangement. (eyeroll) A Portland holiday tradition goes green with the help of LED lighting. And, finally, proposed height changes in Old Town's historic district draws national attention. Visit me on Ma.gnolia

Weekend Bookmarks » Things You May Have Missed

by pearlgirl
In the interest of sharing even more news and events about Portland's 95 neighborhoods, we've decided to share our bookmarks with you. Basically, we'll assemble a collection of links each day (and a weekend recap on Monday mornings) that feature headlines, interesting stories, reviews and more. If it's about your neighborhood, it's worth sharing! This weekend, highlights include reviews of the Superman Orchestra at the Hollywood Theater and "Grub" at IFCC in Kenton. We also got a peek inside the New Deal Distillery and the word on its yet-to-be-released chocolate vodka, as well as a personal account of the premiere of Gus Van Sant's "Milk" at Downtown's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Finally, we learned that OMSI plans to double the size of its current facility in Hosford-Abernethy and create even more space for exhibits and other developments. <a href="http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/NN" mce_href="http://ma.gnolia.co

The State of Oregon Pinot

by stockboy
WK-AN376_TASTIN_D_20081023195707 In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Oregon wines, especially our Pinot Noir, were reviewed. "We are delighted to report that Oregon Pinot continues its upward trajectory. The difference in the wines over the years is remarkable. We found again and again in this tasting that the wines have developed a confidence and depth that beautifully complement their lovely fruit. The wines have not only a purity of fruit but a purity of vision that is very attractive. Like Burgundy itself, these are wines that speak softly to the more romantic parts of our being." The entire article can be read at Wall Street Journal .

Piedmont Business Gets Mention in O Magazine

by pearlgirl
200811_omag_omagcover200811large_144x180 Most businesses would love to add "as seen in O Magazine" to their marketing materials. And, the dream has become a reality for one local business: Ruby Jewel Treats was mentioned in the Eater's Digest of O Magazine's November issue (page 138). Ruby Jewel produces unbelievably good (homemade) ice cream sandwiches. The staffers at O Magazine were particularly smitten with the new ginger cookie/pumpkin ice cream combination, calling it "the one we love most." But, you know that means they really loved 'em all! Check out what creator Lisa Herlinger has to say about this experience on her blog . ***note*** We initially listed Ruby Jewel in the Eliot neighborhood, but it's actually in Piedmont. Portland A Community Leader

by stockboy
"L.A. could learn a thing or two from Portland... The city is a veritable transit utopia where light rail goes to the airport, parking restrictions increase public transit use and free streetcar service benefits downtown businesses. It also has a 20-year head start on planning. By Steve Hymon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer August 18, 2008 I recently spent a long weekend in Portland, Ore. It was hard not to marvel at all the things that city does well on the transportation front. I began to wonder what elements could be applied here." To read the entire article check out the LA Times story.

Portland In the National News... Again!

by stockboy
portland-topper USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .
