Welcome to 2009! The New Year starts off with a breath of fresh air: no smoking in all workplaces —including bars! We also have some good news about a local restaurant , and Brian Libby at Portland Architecture offers a look back at the year in Portland architecture. Lastly, if you're looking for something relaxing to do: Portland Parks provides a list of parks to do some bird watching. So, find some time—between the rain and snow—go for a walk and try to spot a belted kingfisher or hooded merganser . (photo: Pete Baer )

Snowpocalypse 2008 - The Movie
by shooter
I thought everyone might enjoy reminiscing about Snowpocalypse 2008, so I put together this video from the bits I shot during the storm. I've been experimenting with the FlipVideo camera and the storm provided the perfect reason for further experimentation. As I reviewed what I shot, I thought it would be fun to piece the segments together. Here's the result. I hope you enjoy it. Snowpocalypse 2008 - The Movie from Neighborhood Notes on Vimeo .
I like this camera. FlipVideo is a cheap and easy way to capture video for the web. The camera can easily be carried in your pocket or added to a camera bag. I chose the Ultra because it uses AA batteries. Since I always have rechargeable AA batteries in my camera bag power is never a problem. It will capture and store about 60 minutes of video, and has a built in USB plug that makes downloading very easy.
The picture quality is pre

While watching the snow melt over the holiday weekend, we did a little scanning of local news stories. You'll find our list of interesting news links below. The photo is an aerial shot of the Swan Island wind tunnel mentioned in one of the stories. The reason it was built on the lagoon is that the water acts as a filter, removing particles from the air before it enters the air intake (the black square on the end of the building). How this works I'm not exactly sure, but that's what I've been told. If anyone can explain this please comment!

Pesticide-Free Parks Program Designates Two New Parks in Portland Neighborhoods
by pearlgirl
The Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides (NCAP) has partnered with Portland Parks and Recreation to implement the Pesticide-Free Parks program. The program, which began as a trial at Arbor Lodge, Sewallcrest and Lair Hill Parks three years ago, has been very successful. As a result two new parks are being designated pesticide-free. The two new parks are Midland Park in SE Portland and Hillside Park in NW Portland. People want pesticide-free parks! They want places they can go with their children and pets where they won't be exposed to pesticides. "We have been able to replace the use of pesticides with people power." said Haley Smith of Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides. "We're very pleased that Portland Parks and Recreation has designated these parks as Pesticide-Free." Volunteers keep weeds at bay by hand weeding, mulching and propane-powered weed burners. Over the three year trial program, 244 volunteers put in 1,374 hour

PPS Limits Access to Artificial Turf Field Over Lead Concerns
by shooter
PPS has decided to limit access to an artificial turf field adjacent to Rieke Elementary School due to lead levels above some national recommendations. The district decided to do independent tests on its three artificial turf fields after national reports showed high levels of lead in turf fields on the East Coast.
The move is largely precautionary, as the results were within the ranges set by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, but exceeded recommendations for lead in soil set by the Federal Centers for Disease Control.
The school district and Parks Bureau won't allow children 11 under to use the field.

Decision on Colwood Golf Course Delayed
by shooter
The City Council's decision on the fate of Colwood Golf Course — preserve it as open space or rezone it for light industrial — will be delayed until November. Mayor Potter cannot attend tomorrow's City Council meeting and "scheduling conflicts" among the other commissioners push the date for a vote into November. Testimony will still be heard at tomorrow's meeting, so it's important to attend . In May, the land-use hearing officer assigned to the Colwood case issued a report in favor of retaining the open-space designation for the property. The report noted that changing the zoning would lead to increased air pollution, noise pollution, and energy usage. It also noted that the change would be bad for the Whitaker Slough and Columbia Slough, which run through the property. There are plenty of good reasons to keep this property as open space. On top of that list is the lack of open space in Northeast Portland. Jack Bogdanski talks about the

Gateway area scores Ventura Park concerts
by shooter
(Reprinted with the permission of David Ashton, East PDX News ) Story and photos by David F. Ashton Although outer East Portland has numerous City parks - many of them large enough to accommodate thousands of people - the Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) "Music in the Parks" concerts haven't made it east of 92nd Avenue - until now. Under stormy-looking clouds and with the threat of rain, the first Gateway-area "Music in the Park" program began on Thursday, August 21, at Ventura Park, on SE Stark Street. But, it didn't rain - in fact, the sun came out! Slowly, an audience of nearly 200 gathered, seated on lawn chairs and blankets, to enjoy top-quality entertainment for the first time in their park. Chief Kop Kevin Minkoff warmed up the audience at the first-ever Ventura Park concert series Before the show, we spoke with one of the musicians, and also one of the organizers of the event, ever-faithful Gateway bo

Holladay Park Fountain Shutdown
by shooter
On September 9th, Fountain Man, John Bee shut down Holladay Park —one of the Water Bureau 's interactive fountains—at NE 11th and NE Multnomah. No worries. The shut down is only temporary. It's necessary to give the fountain sufficient time to dry out for needed maintenance next week. The fountain must be completely dry in order to complete the work. The fountain is a spouting fountain designed by Tim Clemen and Murase Associates . It was installed in August 2000 to replace a 1965 fountain at the Park. Programmable nozzles and valves on several plumbing loops create a playful atmosphere of surprise trajectories and timing sequences.
