Portland Loos Coming Soon...
by jenniferd
I can hardly hold it -- the excitement I feel in letting you know that the Portland Loos will make their much awaited debut early this December. What is a Portland Loo, you ask? The Portland Loo is Portland's newest form of relief -- a place to go when you gotta go. No longer will you have to hold it until you get home because conveniently located on the street corner will be on oasis to Portland's bladder stretched coffee fiends -- a bathroom. (You might also have heard them referred to as Leonard's Loos in honor of Commissioner Randy Leonard who has so delicately taken these toities from conception to fruition.) The Portland Loo offers high durability and a unique and balanced blend of privacy and security, all at a cost that is a fraction of current stand-alone restroom models. The Loo can be installed almost anywhere that water and sewer hookups are available. They will be open 24/7 and are ADA accsesible. The Loos are solar powered. The first Loo will be installe

Is Portland Falling Behind in Education?
by TeachStreet
As many of you know, this week marks the 25 th anniversary of the sobering delivery of “ A Nation at Risk ” speech, by the then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Reagan had understood, long ago, that the real problem America faced with regard to its national security is its education crisis. The recent news about the performance of the Oregon public school system, especially in Portland, is a continuing reminder that we, as a community, have a serious problem on our hands. And that it is our problem to fix. "If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war. As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves." ~ A Nation at Risk The progress report on the health of the education system in Oregon State was produced

by pearlgirl
Portsmouth neighbors are organizing clean up days and seeking capital improvements for Clarendon Elementary. The school site has fallen into a disgraceful state of disrepair since its closure in 2007, and frustrated neighbors are left to deal with the mess—literally! Read the story at the Portland Tribune. If you'd like to get involved and provide a little hands-on help with the clean up effort, contact Stephen Leiker, Chair of Portsmouth Neighborhood Association's Livability Committee. Email Stephen or give him a call at 503-493-2274.

Dig in the Dirt for Beautiful Schools
by pearlgirl
Make your school shine! On Saturday, Aug. 23, join thousands of volunteers for Community Care Day, 9 a.m. to noon, to take on landscaping and groundskeeping at 75 schools. Click here to sign up. Tasks vary from school to school, but include weeding, pruning, edging and laying bark chips. The volunteer commitment is important to Portland Public Schools, which employs only four groundskeepers to care for about 100 sites. Event sponsors include Pacific Coast Fruit Company and Coastwide Laboratories. Hands On Greater Portland is overseeing volunteer coordination. Volunteers include PPS parents, students and current and retired staff; members of local faith communities, and other community partners. Community Care Day is part of Project: Community Care, a program launched in 2001 to match every school with volunteers and hold events throughout the school year. Project: Community Care aids schools, improves learning and fosters long-term partnerships between groups and individual school

Cully Sparkles After "National Night Out"
by pearlgirl
From Portland Online... On Tuesday (8/5), a group of about 35 volunteers came together with city representatives and police officers to clean portions of Portland's Cully neighborhood. The volunteers picked up litter and swept roadside debris along stretches of Killingsworth and Emerson Streets, and Cully Boulevard, collecting about 40 bags of trash. Community groups represented at the cleanup included Vecinos en Alerta , The Latino Network , Verde , the Cully Association of Neighbors , Hacienda Community Development Corporation (CDC), and the Ortiz Center . The project benefited from generous donations by SOLV , Portland Parks and Recreation , and the Portland City Inter-Bureau Task Force . SOLV also donated signs printed in English and Spanish to remind neighbors of the social and economic costs of littering. Kudos to these neighbors and organizations on a job well done!
