Surprise Snow
by shooter
Just in case you’re not sick of the fluffy white stuff, here's a glimpse of last night’s snowfall. I was working late and noticed the noise from the rain had stopped. When I looked outside, about an inch of snow had already fallen. The flakes were big, heavy, and very wet. It was coming down fast enough to accumulate, but since the ground wasn’t frozen there was lots of slush. I would guess that we received two or three inches in the Pearl. Thankfully, it has melted very quickly. Surprise Snow from Neighborhood Notes on Vimeo . Music is by Nine Inch Nails

I spent a bit of time out in the snow shooting photos and had a ton of fun. Call me crazy, but I enjoyed going out in the worst of it. Here, for you, are the results of my excursion. Enjoy them in the warmth of your home, that is, if you're not sick of seeing snow.
Here is a slide show of more images, or just go striaght to our flickr gallery and browse them on your own. Related links: Another Video of Portlanders Driving in the Snow Snow Day Adventure Snowpocalypse 2008 — The Movie

The Story of the Missing Menorah
by pearlgirl
If you read "The Grinch That Stole Hanukkah?" in the Portland Mercury, you may be wondering if hoping there is more to the story than religious intolerance and hatred. Fortunately, there is more to the story. The real story is about the struggle of community participation—something improved by better communication and process. It's not inflammatory or sensational, but it is worth a read. History of Hoyt Street Yards Community Association (HSYCA) The Hoyt Street Yards Community Association LLC (HSYCA) was created on December 7th, 1998. Its purpose is to maintain and manage the common area of Hoyt Street Yards (owned by the Association): street clean up, supplemental maintenance of Jamison and Tanner Springs parks, neighborhood holiday decorations, hanging flower baskets, security patrols, neighborhood promotions and architectural control of the member buildings (including signage as well as other services). Hoyt Street Yards is the collection of bl

City Crews Working to Clear Main Streets of Ice » Neighborhood Streets Still Very Icy
by pearlgirl
The City of Portland Maintenance Operations crews continue to remain on full callout to clear main streets of ice and prepare for the next storm system expected mid-week. Most transit routes, emergency response routes, and major arterials are in good condition tonight. The public is advised, however, that conditions are variable. Expect patches of ice, packed snow, black ice, and clear pavement. Strong winds may result in downed tree limbs and power lines. Do not drive around barricades and over power lines. Although the City is equipped to deal with the effects of winter weather on our primary and secondary routes, there are limits to the areas we can de-ice, sand, and plow in severe winter storm events. The City of Portland has almost 4, 000 miles of streets. Every major snow and ice event involves plowing 1,300 miles of street and anti-icing 300 miles of street. The Bureau of Transportation does not have the equipment - nor does it have the personnel - to provide anti-icing, de-ici

Transportation Crews Work to Keep the Region Moving
by pearlgirl
Mayor-Elect Sam Adams was joined today by ODOT Region 1 Operations Manager Karla Keller, TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen, and local transportation officials to report on the state of the city and the region due to Sunday's severe winter storm. It clearly requires all transportation authorities and other service bureaus working together to manage a severe winter weather event like we had yesterday and will be dealing with all week. According to officials, state and local crews will continue to work around the clock to do their best to clear highways, streets, bridges, and overpasses. Current conditions are cold, icy, and challenging for everyone trying to get around Portland and the region. Although most Portland streets and all highways are open today, conditions are treacherous and difficult to read as you're driving down the road. Variable conditions exist on City streets - patches of ice, black ice, packed snow and ice, patches of dry pavement, lighter snow in some areas, and mo

Snow Day Adventure
by pearlgirl
Snow Day is a term we get to use very infrequently here in Portland. So, when we looked outside our window yesterday and saw the flakes falling, we couldn't wait to get out in it and enjoy it. That's right, GET OUT and enjoy it. We slipped, slid and giggled [okay, shooter didn't giggle, he laughed] our way around the neighborhood. We stopped by Cupcake Jones , where there was a small crowd gathered, and enjoyed a chat with Lisa, Peter and Kimberly Wilbourne, the owner of spa la la in Kerns. (If you haven't been, definitely give it a try. It's a total girlie wonderland. Love it.) Lisa recommended that we stop by the Portland Classical Chinese Garden in Old Town Chinatown—she used to manage it, did you know that? So, we made our way to the garden and, although it was closed, peeked through the windows. Beautiful. Definitely the most breathtaking scene on our snow day journey. Next, we stopped by The Monkey & The Rat and enjoyed a hot cup of tea, and then checked

by pearlgirl
Mayor Tom Potter will convene his last evening City Council meeting at the Multnomah County Midland Library at 805 SE 122nd Ave. on Dec. 17, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. to consider adoption of the East Portland Action Plan (EPAP). The action plan effort was cosponsored by the City of Portland and Multnomah County to address some of the challenges facing East Portland. During his tenure as mayor, Potter has made a concerted effort to involve a broad cross-section of Portlanders in civic life. The public is invited to attend this City Council meeting to comment on the Action Plan and share their aspirations for East Portland. The East Portland Action Plan committee, composed of local residents, business people, elected officials and other stakeholders, completed phase one of the action plan in July 2008 by identifying key strategies and near- and long-term actions to improve livability in East Portland. The committee considered the issues of Housing and Development, Parks and Open Space, Transp
