Cully-Concordia Community Assessment and Action Plan To Go Before City Council on Nov. 20th

by pearlgirl
community_right Under-Served Part of Portland to Get Attention and Resources The Cully-Concordia neighborhood has long been deprived of basic services like sidewalks, parks and community centers. Through the Schools, Families, Housing program, the area was targeted for improvement, and the Bureau of Planning was enlisted to do an assessment. Planning staff along with engaged community partners will present the Cully-Concordia Community Assessment and Action Plan to City Council for their adoption on November 20 at 2 p.m. The project's intent has been to improve the lives of children and their families while benefiting the whole Cully-Concordia community. Three public schools (Faubion, Rigler and Scott) and one school site near 42nd Ave./Killingsworth St were considered. Key questions addressed were: How can schools become the center of community life? What are the priority programs, services and infrastructure that are needed to support children and families? What are the partnersh

by Trace
postNote-kids “Stuart Gwin of PDOT will be meeting with representatives from King, Concordia, and Vernon to discuss traffic safety issues along Killingsworth, as there is an allocation of PDOT funds dedicated to improving conditions.  If you have opinions about traffic conditions along Killingsworth, specifically between MLK and NE 10th, please let us know by responding to this posting.  Are you concerned about sidewalks?  Visibility? Traffic lights? General speed? Biking? Give your input to: Maureen Mimiaga melspethk @yahoo.com See below for some issues that other neighborhoods have mentioned as examples: Northeast Killingsworth Traffic Safety Issues This is a list of traffic safety issues collected by residents who live near NE Killingsworth between MLK and NE 72 nd Avenue. Vernon Neighborhood Speeds are high - evident by fact that people commonly park their cars on sidewalks between NE 14 th and NE 17 th to avoid getting their rearview mirrors smashed

City Prepares for Wind and Rain

by pearlgirl
Rain The City of Portland's Transportation Maintenance Operations is preparing for rain and wind storms forecasted by the National Weather Service to occur over the next 48 hours. Crews will be working the Veteran's Day holiday today to keep catch basins, culverts, and trash racks clear of debris in response to recent rains and in preparation for more. The City is prepared to deal with downed trees, limbs, and leaves and standing water issues that strong winds and heavy rain could bring.

The City advises residents that they can help reduce street flooding by periodically clearing catch basins (grated storm drains) near their property. The following simple actions can help keep streets open and catch basins clear: Use a rake or pitch fork to clear leaves and debris from catch basins so that water can drain easily. Do not rake leaves into the street. Pile them on the curb in the planting strip (grassy area between the sidewalk and the street). The City's leaf removal servi

Old Town Chinatown Positively Glowing

by pearlgirl
IMG_2232 Old Town Chinatown is glowing—thanks to a small group of volunteers who shined up 20 bronze sidewalk plaques throughout the neighborhood. This effort is part of a long-term plan to raise awareness of these neighborhood treasures. Check out photos of the shine up effor t that took place last week. It only took an hour for neighbors to shine up all 20 plaques. Nancy Stovall, vice chair of the Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood Association, would like to thank Blanchet House   and Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood Association's Arts, Culture & History Committee for their efforts to establish a regular plan of cleaning these beautiful plaques. If you'd like to see these neighborhood treasures up close, download the walking map and take a self-guided tour.

Prostitution Increases on North Interstate

by shooter
prostitution According to The Portland Sentinel , prostitution is on the rise along North Interstate Avenue, Peninsula Park, and along Northeast MLK, based on police and resident reports.

The rise in prostitution could be a result of the increased pressure the Portland Police Department is putting on 82nd Avenue.  As we posted in May, residents saw a sharp increase in prostitution when the No Prostitution Zone expired.  PPD increased its presence along 82nd Avenue and neighbors created a foot patrol to put pressure on prostitutes.  As a result, prostitution along 82nd Avenue is down.

Often though, prostitution activity moves to areas where there is less pressure.  Residents along 82nd thought some prostitution had moved out to 122nd Avenue, but it also moved to the North Interstate area.

North Interstate residents should report any suspicious activity to the police.  Following the lead of residents along 82nd Avenue, North P

Cohousing on the Rise in Portland

by shooter
daybreak-cohousing What factors, other than affordability, determine what kind of neighborhood you'll move to next, as renter or homeowner? Quality of schools, a community garden, public transit options, distance from your workplace, walking distance to stores and coffee shops, air quality and other environmental considerations?

A small, but growing number of Americans, also seek more connection to neighbors through living in cohousing communities-a type of housing where residents participate in the design and operation of their community. More than 100 such communities can be found all across the U.S., with about a half dozen in the Portland area and others in Eugene, Corvallis, Bend and Ashland.

Two cohousing communities are now under construction in North and Northeast Portland. Daybreak Cohousing which broke ground in August on North Killingsworth Street near Greeley Avenue in the Overlook neighborhood, will be Portland's most centrally located cohousing community

Citywide Accessibility Tool Launched

by where's lulu
logo The new Portland-only web site Where's Lulu is a free, online database where Portlanders can rate and review places and services (mostly businesses) based on their accessibility. Example: Are the curb cuts next to the bus stop in front of a Stumptown Coffee Roasters wheelchair-friendly? A search tool allows for filtering using criteria such as whether nearby public transit options exist. Coming up: The ability to upload photos depicting accessibility or inaccessibility of businesses. We founded the site to provide info making it easier for disabled people to get from point A to point B, as well as to establish higher standards of accessibility for businesses and public places in general. The local disabled community is already on board, with users voicing opinions on everything from just how close a Mac Store is to the MAX line, to the wheelchair maneuverability between aisles at swank Southeast eatery Noble Rot. To join Where's Lulu for free, or to learn more, visit http

New Rules for Wireless Phone Towers

by shooter
wireless antenna Wireless phone towers are pretty much ubiquitous these days. We see many design review requests for placing these on the roofs of buildings.  Homeowner Associations or property owners can collect fees by allowing companies to use their roof space for these antennas.

Residential Neighborhoods

In residential neighborhoods it's a different story since most structures are single-family residences of only one or two stories.  In neighborhoods, phone companies pay fees to the city for using utility poles for their antennas.  The city's Office of Cable Communications & Franchise Management surveyed residents about the placement of these antennas and received a huge amount of feedback.  Read the Portland Tribune's story for details.

New Rules

As a result the city is proposing new rules for these antenna poles.  Among other proposed rules, the height of the antenna poles would be reduced form 50 to 40 feet in resid

Pearl District Pot Puffers

toking A resident placed the following notice in the elevator of (anonymous building).  The reason this caught my attention was not that someone was smoking pot in the building, but rather the polite way in which the resident chose to handle the issue.     Notice to (anonymous building) Pot Puffers
Your daily tokes are infiltrating many units at the north end of the building.  Many owners are reporting the smell of pungent weed.
Please do one of the following: Go down to (anonymous park) and toke away Close your windows, put a towel in front of your entry door, and turn on your bathroom exhaust fan Move to another building Distribute stash to other (anonymous building) residents If this is a medical marijuana situation, please notify (anonymous property management firm) so they can alert other resident owners. Most of us don't care what you smoke...we just don't want the smell in our units.

Thank You Typical Course of Action
