by Librarian Kate

A Vegan Library

by Veritable Vegan
mid So when I don't have time (or money) to go out to eat, I love to go to my local library (in this case, the Midland branch of the Multnomah County Library ) to peruse the cookbooks, including a whole section devoted to vegetarian/vegan cookbooks. It's a great way to browse recipes for new ideas without shelling out $30 bucks or so for a book in which you only really like one or two dishes. Once you give it a go and know you like a title, it's easy to head over to Powell's or another local bookstore to pick up a copy of your own, one where you can splatter a little puttanesca sauce without incrimination. Two of my favorites include: Robin Robertson's Some Like it Hot and Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's The Joy of Vegan Baking . Check out your local branch today!

Tool Time for North Portland

by shooter
nopo-tool-lib-057-primary Tools.  We all need them, some of us love them and, often, we don't have the right one for the job at hand.  If you live in North Portland there is a great place to borrow the tool you need—the North Portland Tool Library . Tucked in the basement of the historic Kenton Firehouse, NPTL serves North Portland's need for everything from a wrench to an air compressor or even a nail gun.  The depth and quality of the inventory is amazing! The quarters may be cramped, but the library is well stocked with over 500 tools.  In most cases, they have a deep inventory, so there's a good chance that the tool you need is available. The library operates on a first come, first served basis—it does not place tools on hold.  Feel free to call ahead and check the availability of the tool you need.                     History The North Portland Tool Library was founded in 2004.  M

Almost 40 percent of the funding will be used to purchase materials for sixth-through eighth-graders at 22 schools that PPS has reconfigured from K-5 to K-8.

Each school will receive more than 300 books, including fiction and nonfiction books, as well as books for English language learners, media players, projectors, bookshelves and even 30 Amazon Kindle wireless readers that one classroom will use in a pilot program.

Library staffs at all K-8 schools, including those that previously were middle schools, will receive professional development focusing on three areas: informational literacy (research), K-3 literacy and collaboration between the library and the classroom. Schools receiving new library materials are Arleta , Astor , Boise-Eliot , Bridger
