Neighborhood Association and Community Alert!

by pearlgirl
School Bus - Cartoon 7 Portland Public Schools is planning to change their policy concerning the disposition of real property. They are planning to discontinue the notification of the City of Portland, Multnomah County, Portland neighborhoods, and the public when they are planning to declare a property surplus /(see pages 8 - 15 of PPS Final Board Book ). The 1979 Portland City School Policy was developed during the comprehensive plan process and is still ORDINANCE (Ordinance 150580). It states very clearly the intent and importance of a public partnership among School District #1, local government, neighborhoods, and the public. The above policy changes by PPS #1 seem to be in conflict with the City School Policy, Comp Plan and State Law. If you are able, please check into this policy change and let Portland Public Schools know of your opinion about the need for the public to remain part of this process and tell others about it. Thank you very much for any help you can offer, Don MacGillivray<

Colwood Rezoning Decision Appealed

by shooter
colwood green According to BoJack , the empire is striking back: Ball Janik, on behalf of the Colwood Partnership, is appealing the City Council decision denying their rezoning request for Colwood Golf Course. Even though the council denied the rezoning request in late October , the applicant has the right to appeal the decision within 21 days to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals.  It appears that they have done so.

I'm not sure what happens now, but as you know "it ain't over until it's over."

New Powell’s Books Building Design Unveiled

by shooter
powells-deisgn-primary The Daily Journal of Commerce writes about the new design for the Powell's Books building located at the corner of NW 10th and Burnside.  A prominent feature of the proposed building is the art cube suspended over the front entrance.  The cube would replace the existing, iconic Powell's Books sign with art displayed on several sides of the cube.

Powell's, the Portland Design Commission , the Pearl District Neighborhood Association , and even the chief curator of the Portland Art Museum like the building design and the idea of the art cube.  The design commission did suggest that the tile façade made from recycled glass might be overly complicated and detract from the art cube.

Powell's is not certain when construction will begin and admitted that the economy is a factor in its decision.

Weigh in On Eastside MAX Station Improvements

by Erich
Eastside_Max_Logo For all the green cred and planning plaudits Tri-Met's MAX brings Portland, actually using it for daily commuting is an experience described at best as tolerable. This is especially true for passengers using several of the Eastside MAX stations. Spartan, wind-swept, and isolated from neighborhoods by traffic, trains, and commercial buildings, they are uninviting by day and often dangerous at night. Recognizing this, the city's Bureau of Planning in June launched a project aimed at making several of the Eastside stations safer and more attractive to riders and residents. The Eastside MAX Station Communities Project is examining current land use, building and station design, and transit structures within a half-mile of six Eastside stations (60th Avenue, 82nd Avenue, Parkrose/Sumner, 122nd Avenue, 148th Avenue, and 162nd Avenue; see this map ). Project staff hope to identify and get public input on ways these factors and facilities can be improved to make the stations more welcomi

Globe Hotel Pre-Application Conference

by shooter
globe-hotel The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is moving to new digs in Old Town Chinatown. Their architect, Ankrom Moisan , has applied for a pre-application conference for the proposed renovation of the Globe Hotel building at 88 NW Davis Street. The proposed renovation includes the addition of a 5,000 square foot fifth floor, and 3,500 square feet on the ground floor that may be used for retail.  Another proposed modification to the building reduces the window area on the ground floor along NW Davis.

Founded in 1983, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to advancing healthcare and the art of healing.  It was one of the first Oriental medicine colleges in the United States to provide masters-level instruction. In 2005, it became the first college in the nation to graduate doctors of acupuncture and Oriental medicine.  The school is currently located at 10525 SE Cherry Blossom Drive. Demolition Begins for Broadstone Enso Apartments

by pearlgirl
15th-_-Lovejoy-large-705648 The building at 14th and Lovejoy—former home of Fullfillment Corporation of America—has been demolished to make way for the new Broadstone Enso Apartments. The fence went up a couple weeks ago, and over the past week, the building has been torn down in stages.
Obviously, we started taking photos a little later in the process!           What's this? The little building at the corner of 14th and Lovejoy (the former home of Pearl Real Estate and the Wyatt Showroom) was not demolished. Everything around it is gone, but this tiny building will stay.    Related Information More Pearl District luxury apts  Revised Design for Broadstone Apartments  Sometimes, less is less  Design pushes envelope, commission pushes it back  Public Meeting | Design Advice on 1035 NW 14th Ave  On the Block | Pending Development in the Pearl

New Construction Condos Adjust Pricing

by Agent503
John Ross Low occupancy rates among Portland’s new condo developments are increasing the pressure for many developers. As a result prices have started to drop in recent months. Most new construction condos are now discounted by 10-15% and developers are more likely to entertain aggressive offers. Click here to find out more about occupancy levels and price drops at places like The Encore, John Ross, Pacifica and more.

Publicly Funded Stadium for Beavers in This Economy?

by shooter
portland beavers I like the idea of the Beavers in Lents.  I think it would be good for Lents and East Portland.  A project like this, however, is never simple and many things need to be considered. Via Willamette Week , via Bojack , I read this article from The Nation that criticizes Merritt Paulson's request for $85 million in public funds to build a new stadium for the Beavers and upgrade PGE Park.  As you may know, Merritt owns 80% of the Beavers and Timbers.  He is also the son of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who owns the remaining 20% of these franchises. The Nation's story asks a serious question, should public money be used for this project given the current economic woes and budget constraints on the city, and given that the owners of the franchise are extremely wealthy?  Tell us what you think?
