Hermitage is a Home
by Julie D
I dropped into Hermitage this week and had my usual head spinning desire for everything in the shop. Jennifer June is the talented proprietress of Hermitage, with an exquisite eye for the stupendously cool and unique. One of the things Jennifer does best is bring work from independent artists living outside of Portland into Portland. I like that when I go to her shop, I can say, who is this by? Instead of ... oh I love this, it is by so and so, right? While Hermitage is the home to many lovely home accessories, the main focus here is on wallpaper. Jennifer retails some of the most unique and special wallpaper designers I have come across. Much is handmade, screen printed, block printed or hand painted. A perusal of her books made me consider wallpapering my whole house. But I have refrained. For now. If this sounds too good to be true, it is. Jennifer will be closing Hermitage's Portland doors in January and relocating to Seattle. I am not sure what Seattle has done to deserve suc

Deconstruct This
by Allison
Der Lovett likes to take things apart. Not small things like radios or carburetors, but big things like buildings. In fact, he likes it so much that he couched his ambitions as a furniture designer (pardon the pun) and left the family restaurant business in Ireland to move to Portland where he opened Lovett Deconstruction Inc . The Kenton neighborhood business responsibly dismantles parts of or entire buildings, salvaging as much material as possible to be reused in other buildings, recycled, or resold as decorative items or replacement parts in older Portland homes. While the focus of the business is on the actual deconstruction, last July Der opened a retail warehouse and yard to sell the pieces that he and his crew painstakingly salvage from churches, schools, government buildings, and residences. A walk through the well-organized shop with employee, Matt Redhead, revealed piles of heavy wood doors and windows, decorative light fixtures, brass door knobs, funky alarm c

Home Office » Seven Tips to Increase Productivity
by pearlgirl
Everyone loves the idea of working from home. Although the thought of setting your own hours, working in your PJ's, having the world's best boss and eliminating that pesky commute is incredibly alluring—the reality is that working at home is incredibly difficult. Get in the Zone First things first: It's important to do a little checking and make sure that your home office meets local zoning requirements. There are reasons for residential and commercial zoning—it's not always possible to run your business out of your home. Your business can impact the traffic, parking and livability of your neighborhood. An upset neighbor, Homeowners Association or Neighborhood Association will definitely dampen your productivity. In Portland, the City recognizes two types of businesses that are suitable for residential zones: • Type A . A Type A home occupation is one where residents use their home as a place of work; however, no employees or customers/clients come to the

Shop Talk - The Arrangement
by alex
I love shopping in my own Northeast neighborhood. I'm quite lucky to have some great little boutiques practically around the corner! Take The Arrangement , for instance. I always seem to have plenty of time to shop there since it's conveniently located next to hubby-magnets such as Pizzicato, Beaumont Market and the hardware store. Take your time, honey; I'll be right over here! The Arrangement is a great one-stop shop for cards, gifts, home decor, and fashion accessories... read more »

This past Saturday, I was invited to attend the grand opening of Portland's newest floral design and home decor stores, Ink & Peat . I was SO excited – I had been meaning to stop by Pam's store since she first opened her doors a few weeks ago and knew I would be in for a treat based on the pictures she had posted on her blog . And boy, she did not disappoint! Ink & Peat is filled with treasures big and small that include must-haves for the home and body. While taking the photos below, my heart kept jumping with delight as I discovered piece after piece... read full article »

Portland's Community Gardens Struggle to Grow
by shooter
My parents were gardeners, Dad especially. We had a good-sized lot in Menlo Park , about half way between San Francisco and San Jose. On it were two apple trees, two walnut trees, a plum tree, and space for a vegetable garden. Every spring, Dad would clear the plot for the vegetables and do whatever needed to be done to the trees. Once that was done, my parents would turn their attention to the flowers and shrubs around the house. All summer they would work around the yard this way. Of course, when the vegetables started coming in, we all enjoyed their efforts. In late summer the apples would ripen and my parents would get busy canning apple butter, baking, and passing apples out to the neighbors. The plums were used for plum jam and the occasional "plum fight" with my friends in the neighborhood. The walnuts were stored until the holidays when we would crack them open for mom to use in her holiday baking.
As we grew up and Dad got tired of
