A Mexican Vegan
by Veritable Vegan
After the recent closing of several vegan/vegetarian restaurants, I am really excited about the opening a month or so ago of Los Gorditos II, an all vegan taqueria truck that is muy delicioso ! From tacos to burritos, tostadas to tortas ... it's all great -- and a great value, too. Today a friend and I tried the "regular burrito" -- a flour tortilla with beans, rice, tomato, avocado onion and cilantro ($4.50, or $5 with vegan cheese and sour cream) that was enough for two meals. We also sampled the regular tacos (2 for only $1.75 and enough for lunch) and, best of all, was the rolled tacos: four fried rolled tortillas filled with potatoes and Soyrizo topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and cilantro ($4.50). Maybe because I added the vegan cheese and sour cream, but mine came with rice and beans, too, making for a huge dinner for only $5. If you don't care of the distinctive taste of Soyrizo, you can also choose from tofu, grilled veggies or soy curls for any of the item

Is Your Neighborhood A Food Desert?
by pearlgirl
According to Wikipedia, "A food desert is a district with little or no access to foods needed to maintain a healthy diet , but often served by plenty of fast food restaurants." It may surprise you to learn that there are such places in Portland. Food deserts are problematic because they prevent access in three forms: physical, financial and mental (food knowledge). Nutshell Restaurant - Closed
by geoffk
Add another restaurant to the Portland Restaurant Dead Pool. Nutshell Restaurant has closed . The Restaurant was an ambitious venture from the same group which owns Tabla and Ten01. Started as a vegan restaurant, focusing on local and organic ingredients, Nutshell hit tough times when founding chef Sean Coryell departed the restaurant. After several retoolings and an ultimate dropping of their vegan menu Nutshell never could get its bearings . A recent review from Alison Hallett in the Portland Mercury, summed up everything which wasn't working at the ailing restaurant. Her review: Cracked Up - Nutshell’s Unsuccessful Revisioning can be seen as the final nail in their coffin. Nutshell joins a growing list of restaurants which haven't made it trough these tough economic times. Other restaurants who have recently closed including: Rocket , Kalga Cafe , Banh Cuon Tan Dinh , Genoa , and Carboni’s, the BBQ/wood-fire pizza.
