A Mexican Vegan
by Veritable Vegan
After the recent closing of several vegan/vegetarian restaurants, I am really excited about the opening a month or so ago of Los Gorditos II, an all vegan taqueria truck that is muy delicioso ! From tacos to burritos, tostadas to tortas ... it's all great -- and a great value, too. Today a friend and I tried the "regular burrito" -- a flour tortilla with beans, rice, tomato, avocado onion and cilantro ($4.50, or $5 with vegan cheese and sour cream) that was enough for two meals. We also sampled the regular tacos (2 for only $1.75 and enough for lunch) and, best of all, was the rolled tacos: four fried rolled tortillas filled with potatoes and Soyrizo topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and cilantro ($4.50). Maybe because I added the vegan cheese and sour cream, but mine came with rice and beans, too, making for a huge dinner for only $5. If you don't care of the distinctive taste of Soyrizo, you can also choose from tofu, grilled veggies or soy curls for any of the item

A Sip of Vegan Milkshakes
by Veritable Vegan
With only a few golden moments like today left among the waning days of summer, everyone should bike on over to Sip , a recently opened food cart parked on the patio of People's Food Co-Op in Southeast. There are all sorts of beverages from juices to smoothies to - my favorite - the vegan milkshakes. They're tall, thick, creamy and quite an indulgence - and did I say vegan? Peanut butter chocolate was my favorite, but today's orange creamsicle hit the spot. The young fella behind the counter - I think he is the owner - says that he'll be switching over to hot drinks - like cocoa, teas and soups - around the turn of the month, so you only have a couple more glorious weekends to wheel over for a Sip. Sip is located in front of People's Co-op at 3029 SE 21 st Ave.

Portland In the National News... Again!
by stockboy
USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .

Seriously different summer quenchers
by shooter
OK, this list of summer drinks assembled by The Oregonian sounds truly evil and something to definitely try. It's obvious these establishments take their summer drinks very seriously. Personally, I want to try the B-Side soda at Sahagun. Not just because it sounds great, but I then have an excuse to eat more of her chocolate. If you haven't tried it you must. Shops mentioned include:
Northwest
Sahagun
Elephants
Downtown
Give Pizza a Chance
The Sugar Cube
Spella Café
Northeast
Por Que No?
RX Roadside Juice Bar
Southeast
Pok Pok

Paradise Found in Sellwood
by pearlgirl
As we've mentioned ( here and here ), we're shifting gears and trying to ride our bikes more and use our gas-guzzler less. Because I am traffic-phobic, we've been doing rides on low-traffic streets and multi-use paths to build up my confidence. (Big thanks to Jonathan Maus at BikePortland.org and Michelle Poyourow at BTA for the hand-holding and advice!!!) This morning, feeling particularly ambitious, we biked to Sellwood via the Springwater Corridor . (Thanks to Jo Carter for inspiring us to try this route. She commutes from her home in Sellwood to her shop in the Pearl via this trail, and couldn't say enough good things about it.) Good gawd—I can't imagine a better start to any day. The air was crisp, the ride was scenic and the commuters were SMILING. How's that for a change of pace??? We got a lot of enthusiastic "good mornings!" and smiles as we made our way down the trail—this just doesn't happen in a car—it was totally nice, and so unex
