Now Open » Cocoon Silk and Bonnet

by pearlgirl
open Caryl Brown has been hard at work filling the Gregory Condominiums with new retail tenants. Her latest additions are Cocoon Silk and Bonnet , which nicely complement existing fashion retail tenants Haberdashers , Lucia and Monique's Boutique . Henny Penny's departure will give Brown another space to lease, and we have to wonder if she has another fashion retailer in mind for the space. Kudos to Brown and Debbie Thomas Real Estate on quickly filling these transitioning spaces with such great tenants. Cocoon Silk opened its second location—the first is on NW 23rd Avenue—at 416 NW 11th Avenue. The shop offers handmade silk shirts, dresses, pants and skirts sourced from its family-owned silk farm in Cambodia. Because the entire production process is under their control, Cocoon Silk can also make custom clothing.        Cocoon Silk offers handmade handbags and jewelry.

Achieve Your Fitness Resolution For 2009

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree How many years have gone by where your New Year's resolution was to exercise and get in shape , but by the end of the year you've found yourself having to renew that promise?

If you aren't a hardcore athlete , and don't plan to be, then yoga lessons may be the genie in a bottle that makes your New Year's wishes come true in 2009.

Especially if you have prior joint and bone injuries, doing plyometrics, weightlifting and running on a treadmill can put a lot of strain on your vulnerable body parts.  The non-abrasive, body flexing, joint strengthening art of yoga is just what the doctor orders.  The dual benefit of yoga over many other forms of exercises is that it is a powerful mental discipline as well.  Yoga means union, which through my interpretation is the union of the mind and body.  Practicing meditation has many great health benefits beyond the physical, as many doctors claim.&

Henny Penny Says Goodbye

by pearlgirl
6a00e54ee6112c883401053699611c970b-800wi A note from Henny Penny : After six years Henny Penny is closing its doors. We are sorry to disappoint our loyal customers, and have truly appreciated their patronage and will always cherish the joy of offering our unique gifts and apparel to the Portland community. Please stop by and help clear our racks! All of our new spring and fall/winter apparel and accessories, diaper bags, books, and toys are 50% off. Additional apparel from previous seasons is 75% off. Also enjoy great deals on our hangers, fixtures, and decorations. According to the manager, the owners have decided to pursue other interests and felt that it was appropriate to close now, given the current economic conditions. She says the store will be open until the inventory is sold, which she anticipates will be about two weeks.  Henny Penny will be missed.

The Pearl Bids Farewell to Aubergine

by pearlgirl
mcduff-aubergine Another local business falls victim to this merciless economy: Aubergine will close its doors no later than January 31, 2009. All merchandise is 50% off and store fixtures are also for sale. Local retailers and residents alike are mourning the loss of this small business—a neighborhood staple since 1994. We'll all miss seeing McDuff's little face in the window at 11th and Glisan.

Landlord Lockdown » Nirvana Apothecary & Day Spa

by pearlgirl
nirvana-primary Nirvana Apothecary & Day Spa is the latest Pearl District business to be locked down by its landlord. Bear in mind that changed locks do not mean permanent closure. In some cases, it's due to a miscommunication . We hope that this is one of those cases.

How to Get the Smoky Eye Look That's Right for You

by pearlgirl
smokey-eye-primary Perfecting the smoky eye look is the holy grail of beauty. For those of you scratching your head, smoky eye is that smoldering, sexy eye makeup application that can either make you look like a racoon or a bonafied man-eater. If you've tried to create this look for a night out on the town, you know there's a very thin line between success and failure. Rocky Raccoon : Easy. Adriana Lima : good luck.  Fortunately, there are many variations of the smoky eye and there are no hard or set rules on how to get it. In this step-by-step tutorial, makeup artist Fez Vartan creates a natural smoky eye that will suit just about anyone.   What you'll need: eye shadow: light, medium and deep, eye lash curler, mascara and makeup brushes ( Get Fez's recommendations )       Before:   Notice the unevenness of eyelid oils and color.         Step 1: Apply a light, neutral tone base powder color from lashline to brow. New Boutique, Amai Unmei, A Must Visit

by northwest nola
5307fuschia A friend of mine recently opened up a great boutique on NW 23rd, Amai Unmei . I know I'm partial, but what a cool store! When I found out she was opening up shop right down the street from me, I was excited. But when I walked in to her brand spanking new lair o'fashion, I was even more excited, as I totally got it. This lady is in the fashion business for a reason; because she gets fashion. Not only do the the fashions rock, but the store itself is gorgeous. It is clean and bright. You feel like you can get your shopping done while you're there. I also think it's neat that Allison, the owner/designer, spends a fair amount of time manning the mothership. How cool to walk into a store and actually speak with the designer who made the dress you're about to buy. I spent a good twenty minutes salivating over the rich silky dresses and trendy winter coats, while silently deciding what I'm not going to buy at other stores this month in order to buy one of Allison's dresses. Full disclosu

Three Monkeys -- Expanded and Even Cooler

by northwest nola
IMG_6842 I went by one of my favorite stores today -- Northwest Portland's Three Monkeys. Recently, they expanded their store, combining what was once Three Monkeys (vintage housewares) and Three More Monkeys (clothes) into one giant Three Monkeys store. And I know I'm partial because I already loved this store to begin with, but I love it even more in its newly expanded space. The new space is larger, warm, welcoming and calls to your inner shopper. Maybe it's because there are all sorts of bright and shiny objects to choose from; maybe it's because I like that vintage-y style of decor, but something about the new store is worth at least a look -- especially as the holiday season comes rushing upon us. As far as fashion goes, they just got in a giant selection of holiday dresses, so if you're in the market for one, take a gander at their selection. Since I am a "touch" shopper (I like to touch appealing fabrics and such) I was in a little paradise of sorts trying to find a dress f
