Rachel Ann Austin
by Julie D
Rachel Austin , carpenter turned painter, is a delightful artist living in SE Portland. She is inspired by small precious moments often missed in the hustle of the day. I love the shapes and colors that she uses, and in addition to her oil paintings, she uses various other mediums, such as watercolor and mixed media. She has a private studio, but you can buy and view her work at some really cute local shops. Cheeky B , Tilde , and Noun to name a few. She will also be showing at a couple of sales in person this winter: The Sunday Best , November 30th The Crafty Wonderland , December 14th Read More...

Fourteen30 Contemporary Opens Friday
by shooter
Fourteen30 Contemporary will open this Friday at 1430 SE Third Ave. What is different about this gallery? That would be the owner Jeanine Joblonski. In the Oregonian's recent article about the gallery, Joblonski states that the gallery isn't the latest addition to her resume but a culmination. She states directly that "This will be my livelihood, I want longevity. I'm here to stay." That's a strong statement.
Joblonski has the pedigree, experience, and backing to pull it off. She has degrees from Oregon College of Art and Craft and the Memphis Art College , has curated several exhibits, writing, and recently assistant director to Elizabeth Leach. She also has a financial backer for the gallery to bring stability during these economically turbulent times.
The inaugural Reception is Friday Sept 26th from 6-9pm.

New Exhibit » Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art
by shooter
Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art brings together 13 artists and artists groups from North America and Europe, all of whom incorporate sustainable thinking in their art and social change in their message. The exhibition includes existing works, commissions, and previously presented work that has been "recycled," spotlighting ways in which artists are building paths to new forms of practice. Many of the artists work collaboratively and leaven serious social aims with playful, off-the-grid spark. Their approaches range from the metaphorical to the pragmatic, sometimes serving as models for audience activism. This traveling exhibition makes its only stop in the Northwest at Lewis & Clark's Hoffman Gallery . Here's a little taste of what you'll see... paraSITE by Michael Rakowitz, 1998. Vinyl, nylon, and attachment hardware. ParaSITES provide the homeless with an unconventional living space. Using inflatable plastic structures, Rakowitz has created

New NW Boutique is Absolutely Unique!
by northwest nola
Today I visited what surely must be one of Portland's most unique spaces -- a new boutique art gallery tucked quietly into Northwest Portland. The Life Jacket Design Shop & Gallery, which opened about 6 weeks ago, is home to all things original: one-of-a-kind artwork, mixed media, accessories and home decor. Owner and resident Carol Christensen, a Seattle native who recently relocated to Portland after spending 18 years in New York, is both curator and artisan of this little museum. She will proudly guide you on a tour of her small space, telling you many of the stories that accompany her creative expressions. Carol named the gallery, Life Jacket, at least partially in reference to the fact that it's her new project aimed at taking her mind off of her son going away to college. In essence, it is her "lifejacket," though she is sure to note that she is not quite that desperate! A lifejacket, she thinks, tends to wrap itself around you and keep you above the "st

"Bande a part" at Augen Gallery
by shooter
For those of us who grew up in the 60's, started appreciating music in the 70's, and came of age in the 80's, this show will be bring back memories. Even though I grew up on the opposite coast, this music was very much a part of my life. A show like this will take me beyond the music and glimpse the lifestyles of the music "heroes" that us "wannabes" tried to emulate. I can't wait to drop by to see this show.Read D.K. Row's article at The Oregonian.
