While watching the snow melt over the holiday weekend, we did a little scanning of local news stories. You'll find our list of interesting news links below. The photo is an aerial shot of the Swan Island wind tunnel mentioned in one of the stories. The reason it was built on the lagoon is that the water acts as a filter, removing particles from the air before it enters the air intake (the black square on the end of the building). How this works I'm not exactly sure, but that's what I've been told. If anyone can explain this please comment!

Here's today's list of noteworthy news. One story of particular interest is the City's efforts to purchase the Main Post Office site. It seems that progress is being made as both the PDC and the Post Office have arrived at very similar appraisal values for the property. That is a good sign and simplifies the negotiations. Proposed uses for the site include a corporate campus, a university, even a major league baseball stadium, though the latter is not likely. This property presents a huge opportunity to the city to expand the downtown and fulfill the promise of a mixed-use area in the River District URA.

Here is our daily list of interesting links. One of the stories is about land that University of Portland has purchased. I believe the land is the McCormick & Baxter Creosote Plant superfund site. It has been a great site for photography, and most recently even used as a small skateboard park. I guess it's good the land will be used, but it's a great example of urban decay and I'll hate to see that go.

Made in Oregon Sign Update
by shooter
The pre-application conference for the proposed change to the "Made in Oregon" sign occurred on December 9, 2008. The result of that conference was a list of procedural requirements for the applicant, Ramsay Signs , to follow. A pre-application conference is a way to get your "ducks" in a row prior to submitting an application to the Bureau of Development Services.
The next step is for Ramsay Signs to file its Historic Design Review application. Once the application has been reviewed, a hearing is scheduled, and the public has been notified of the Design Review hearing, the public can comment on the proposal. Details for submitting comments will be included in the public notice, and we will provide that as soon as the notice is distributed.
If you would like more information, the Bureau of Development Services has created a web page for the proposal. The page includes a detailed description
