Bunk gets an A+
by Julie D
The quest of three girls to find the best breakfast sandwich in town landed us at Bunk today. It certainly did not disappoint! The folks at Bunk seem to understand the importance of the breakfast sandwich, a menu item that has long been a personal favorite of mine. I find far too many restaurants seem to throw this on their list of offerings without much thought or curation leaving me dissatisfied far more often than satisfied. What makes a great breakfast sandwich? For starters, the perfect bread. Bunk's version comes served on a lightly toasted poppy seed bun made locally at Fleur De Lis Bakery & Cafe. The bread is delicious. It is a smidge doughy, very soft, and not at all crumbly. There is nothing I hate more than a lap full of crumbs. The egg seemed just right. It was cooked pretty thoroughly so the yolk didn't drip, but wasn't overcooked either. The cheese was a sharp cheddar which gave the sandwich a little kick. And finally the smoked applewood ba

The vegan Paradox
by Veritable Vegan
With a hankering for french fries and a Chinook Book coupon burning a hole in my pocket (15% off!), my partner and I decided to swing by Paradox Cafe for a quick bite to eat before heading home from work.Since most of my memories of Paradox were of waiting for a table, I was really pleased to see that the restaurant had completed its recent expansion into the adjacent storefront. Despite all the organic this and alternative that, Paradox continues to simply be down-home comfy -- great food without the 'tude.
Although not exclusively vegetarian, most of Paradox 's made-from-scratch menu is already or can be made vegan. What's even better is that those options are all clearly spelled out on the menu, which features all-day breakfast, soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers. Don't expect any frilly dress-ups here, though; the vegan options are mostly hardworking substitutions of tofu or tempeh. Not that there's anything wrong with that, because Paradox does thi

A Mexican Vegan
by Veritable Vegan
After the recent closing of several vegan/vegetarian restaurants, I am really excited about the opening a month or so ago of Los Gorditos II, an all vegan taqueria truck that is muy delicioso ! From tacos to burritos, tostadas to tortas ... it's all great -- and a great value, too. Today a friend and I tried the "regular burrito" -- a flour tortilla with beans, rice, tomato, avocado onion and cilantro ($4.50, or $5 with vegan cheese and sour cream) that was enough for two meals. We also sampled the regular tacos (2 for only $1.75 and enough for lunch) and, best of all, was the rolled tacos: four fried rolled tortillas filled with potatoes and Soyrizo topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and cilantro ($4.50). Maybe because I added the vegan cheese and sour cream, but mine came with rice and beans, too, making for a huge dinner for only $5. If you don't care of the distinctive taste of Soyrizo, you can also choose from tofu, grilled veggies or soy curls for any of the item

Mmmm.... Nob Hill Burgers
by northwest nola
So, coming home from work today, I find myself craving nothing but a Nob Hill (Bar & Grill) burger. MMMM... can you taste it? A perfectly cooked, juicy beef patty topped in anything I want and nothing I don't want. And the fries? Divine! I think it will be the perfect, greasy end to a long Wednesday. Now, understand that this blogger does not eat burgers regularly -- or even often. In fact, I don't even eat red meat; except for burgers at Nob Hill. They are just that good. Why do I love it so much? It has something to do with the dive-y feeling of the place, mixed with the terse service people and the delicious food. I guess it makes for an all out entertaining and delicious dining experience. And the smoke? Well, that will be going away soon, but even I (the self-proclaimed anti-smoking queen of the world) can deal with it until then, to wrap my mouth around a Nob Hill. It's worth it, I promise. I'll be there for dinner tonight? You? nn

Vegan at the Vegetarian House
by Veritable Vegan
OK, it's a bit ironic that the Vegetarian House -- Portland's vegetarian Chinese restaurant -- is located between butcher shops, but then again .... How cool is it that we have such an establishment has taken root in the heart of Chinatown? What I love about this place is that the Orange Chik'n makes my mouth water just writing about it and the all-you-can-eat weekday lunch buffet is a steal at only about $6.50 or so. One note: Some vegans aren't crazy about meat analogs. If you're among that camp, you might best try one of the other excellent vegan establishments in town because the Vegetarian House leans heavily on protein sources of tofu and seitan. For the rest of us .... did I mention the Orange Chik'n? Vegetarian House is located at 22 NW 4th Ave.; 503-274-0160. Sep 29,2008

by shooter
A new downtown delivery service started Friday evening: Hunger Squad . They deliver food, drinks, sweets, tobacco, and even condoms to your door with an $8 minimum order. It's really simple: go online, register, and place your order. A little bit later, you get a knock on your door... I asked owner Dustin Taylor about his target demographic and he said, "anyone who, for whatever reason, doesn't want to go out." Are you sick and need some soup? Watching a football game and need more snacks? Working really late and everything else is closed? Or do you just want stay parked on the couch? Hunger Squad can take care of you!
Hunger Squad stocks all the items they deliver, and hopes to make a profit off the sale of items and the kindness of customers (a.k.a. tips). Dustin got the idea for Hunger Squad while working for Madtown Munchies in Madison, Wisconsin.

Pearl District Changes — Exit World Cup, Enter Laughing Planet
by shooter
World Cup Coffee in the Ecotrust Building will close its doors on Saturday. The company said that the Pearl location wasn't performing as well as its other stores. The lagging performance, along with other factors, led to the company's decision to close the store. World Cup's other locations will remain open, including its nearby store and roasting plant at NW 18th and Glisan. The Ecotrust Building is a prime location and you wouldn't expect it to remain empty for long—it's not, it's already leased! Laughing Planet has leased the space and will open a new café later this year. If you're not familiar with Laughing Planet, here's an excerpt from their website: "The Laughing Planet Café is a quick-service restaurant that serves nutritious fare in the form of tasty burritos (aka "PNDs" or "Portable Nutrition Devices"), bowls, soups, salads, smoothies, juices and home-made cookies. We are dedicated to making wholesome food a

Vegan on the Cheap: It's a Beautiful Pizza
by Veritable Vegan
Times are tough. Dining out can be expensive. And even in Portland, when you're vegan you have that many fewer choices. But one of my absolute favorite penny-pinchin' places to fill up is It's a Beautiful Pizza on SE Belmont. To begin with, I love the Belmont business row: From Zupans to Paradox, Theater! Theatre! to the cupcake place that apparently has vegan cupcakes (sorry I can't remember its name right now). And I love the huge corrals of bicycle parking. Kind of an alt-Hawthorne, if such a thing is possible. But back to IBP' s real-steal deal: fresh breadsticks. A large portion, with plenty of garlic and served with a side of savory pizza sauce for dipping. All for only a buck! It fills you up and satiates the pizza craving — and it's vegan. Beautiful! It's a Beautiful Pizza is located at 3342 SE Belmont St; 503-233-5444.

Eateries Open Throughout the City
by shooter
The Tribune has a nice list of new eateries that have opened over the last few months. Included on the list are a couple of our recent favorites, 50 Plates , which we've talked about, and D.O.C , which we'll dish about very soon. The restaurant that caught my eye, and that the Mercury talked about in great detail, is Tastebud . Chef-owner Mark Doxter has sold his rustic baked goods at famers markets around Portland for several years. After many customer requests, he opened a dining room at 3220 SE Milwaukie.
I like his story because he's someone who didn't gain a name by working in great restaurants or with "star" chefs—he gained a reputation by selling high-quality products at the local farmers markets.
Tastebud (Brooklyn) is high on my list of new restaurants to try.
Here are the other restaurants mentioned: 50 Plates (Pearl District) Belly Timber (Sunnyside) D.O.C. (Concordia) Belly (King) Lincol
