Hermitage is a Home
by Julie D
I dropped into Hermitage this week and had my usual head spinning desire for everything in the shop. Jennifer June is the talented proprietress of Hermitage, with an exquisite eye for the stupendously cool and unique. One of the things Jennifer does best is bring work from independent artists living outside of Portland into Portland. I like that when I go to her shop, I can say, who is this by? Instead of ... oh I love this, it is by so and so, right? While Hermitage is the home to many lovely home accessories, the main focus here is on wallpaper. Jennifer retails some of the most unique and special wallpaper designers I have come across. Much is handmade, screen printed, block printed or hand painted. A perusal of her books made me consider wallpapering my whole house. But I have refrained. For now. If this sounds too good to be true, it is. Shop Talk – Ink & Peat
by alex
This past Saturday, I was invited to attend the grand opening of Portland's newest floral design and home decor stores, Ink & Peat . I was SO excited – I had been meaning to stop by Pam's store since she first opened her doors a few weeks ago and knew I would be in for a treat based on the pictures she had posted on her blog . While taking the photos below, my heart kept jumping with delight as I discovered piece after piece... read full article »

The Ceramics of Gertrud and Otto Natzler
by pearlgirl
August 2, 2008-January 25, 2009 Focusing on work from a local collection and several museums, this exhibition provides a sampling of ceramics by the late Gertrud and Otto Natzler. The Natzlers - who became internationally known for their distinct lava and crater glazes and elegant yet simple pots, bowls, vases and other hand-thrown vessels - produced over 25,000 works together out of their Los Angeles-based studio betwen 1935 and 1971. This exhibition celebrates the Natzlers' richly textured, colorful work and pays tribute to the lives of two important leaders in the history of modern ceramics. The exhibition also explores their influence on contemporary ceramics and includes work by Adam Silverman and Jeremy Briddell. Selected audio recordings, archival photographs and films will be available in the exhibition gallery. Molly Quan, graphic designer and photographer, fulfilled her desire to open a plant store with the launch of Life+Limb in November 2007—but Life+Limb is anything but ordinary! The minute you walk through the door, you're aware that design lives here. With her new shop, Quan has been able to combine her interests in plants, modern design, and art to create a new plant and home accessories shopping experience. She says that many times, shoppers don't even realize that the plants are for sale! Quan offers an amazing selection of ceramics from Jonathan Adler, Perch!, Page Russell
