If you’ve never happy houred at The Old Gold, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you order at the bar, then take your seat. Second, there are no signature cocktail discounts, but there are dollar-off deals on house wines, wells and a carefully chosen selection of craft beers on draft. And third, the only thing you’ll find on the happy hour eats menu are sandwiches, but don’t let that bring you down. In addition to offering fried egg, grilled cheese and chicken salad sandos, the kitchen puts out wonderfully gamey (and grass-fed) elk burgers with melted fontina and dried cherry relish, as well as a perplexing roasted pork sandwich made with kale slaw and pickled onions. Pleasantly perplexing, that is, because you may think that’s curry you’re tasting, but it’s not—rather, the pork is braised in orange juice, tequila, brown sugar, achiote, and a variety of other roasted spices. Plus, the kitchen makes a killer vegan bánh mì that’s so tasty it could bring even the most unapologetic carnivores to their knees. Each sandwich comes with salt-and-pepper potato chips or, for $2 more, seasoned fries. Happy hour lasts from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
