Since opening the doors to her "inauthentic Asian" eatery Smallwares, Johanna Ware has become something of a media darling. And (unless your tongue's broken), you'll be powerless to agree that she's well on her way to earning a place in the pantheon of Portland's most innovative chefs. Inside Smallwares, patrons of age will find Barwares and a late-night menu that features oysters, marinated in lime juice and fish sauce, that’ll win the reluctant hearts of those who steer clear of shellfish, plus where else can you find discounted fish dishes (like hamachi served with crème fraiche, crispy onions and a dollop of chili jam, or pink peppercorn-dusted scallop sashimi) from an ever-changing raw bar? Ware’s eggplant plate, consisting of four button-like pieces dug out like little canoes and stuffed with shrimp paste before getting the deep-fry treatment, are worth staying up for, but it just might be her tempura-fried kale, seasoned with mint, fish sauce and candied bacon lardons, that'll not only convert you but likely make her cozy dining room your new church. Oh, and there are monthly cocktail specials crafted with whatever's in season. At Barwares, it's happy hour every night, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
